I have a 90 Cavy with a 2.2L and the Isuzu 5 speed. Two nights ago I was going to get gas - but it wouldn't go into gear. If the engine is off, I can shift into any of the forward gears, but it will not go into reverse. If the engine is running, it won't go into any gear. When it's running, it will grind at attempts to go into reverse - but ONLY reverse. The forward gears just feel like there is something keeping it from going into gear, but no grinding.
At first I thought it might be the shift cables (wow those are expensive), but the gate select and the shift select seem to function just fine. If I start it in gear (but the clutch depressed, obviously) it will run just fine with the clutch in. If I drop the clutch with the brakes applied, it kills the engine like you'd expect - there doesn't seem to be any slip before the car dies. This leads me to believe that the clutch surface itself is okay.
The only thing I'm left with is that the pressure plate is shot. What do you all think? Am I forgetting or missing something, or does my prognosis make sense?
And my final question: is it possible to change the clutch / pressure plate WITHOUT pulling the motor / transaxle? I just don't have the facilites to do that.
Thank you all for your help.
Jim
One more question. How much travel should the shaft on the slave cylinder have? Mine probably moves less than half an inch when the clutch is depressed. Seems like that wouldn't be nearly enough.
I misread some symptoms the last time I had the car running. Must have been some slippage I just didn't notice because now, with the clutch fully applied, the car still wants to move. If I hold the brake, it dies.
1. Is my slave cylinder shot? I have no idea how much travel it's supposed to have. Perhaps it's just not disengaging the clutch.
2. Bent clutch fork?
3. Bent pressure plate springs?
if its hard to put into gear then u probably have bad syncros in the tranny
