I am using this car at the local oval speedway and I need to come up with some ways to add more power. I read a few threads that dealt with this subject. I'm not unrealistic. I know there aren't many performance parts for this engine. I am just looking to gain maybe 20 - 30 HP. I can't swap the engine for a V6 because the 4 cylinder is required. Also I can't turbo charge it. It has to N/A.
I am currently looking into replace the Throttle Body unit or swapping the injectors out for a set that will pump more fuel than the stock set. Any suggestions?
Thanks A Lot for any info anyone can give.
Well, first I'll say that TBI only has one injector, and it can flow a good amount of fuel. Also, you need both air and fuel to make power. I would say first off to make or buy yourself some type of high flow intake, and you can get a header for 2.2 that will bolt right on, but you'll probably have to get a downpipe custom made. And you also want to go with a bigger exhaust pipe, like 2 1/4". Other than that, you could have the head shaved which would raise compression a bit, and a few other things. You could get alot more power, but it costs. and it all depends on what kind of limitations you have. You should update your registry with your car info.
are you limited on displancment and does the motor have to come stock in that type of car??? if i were you, id swap in a 2.3l quad 4 ho. they are 180hp, but are far from a direct swap, but not impossible. you need to weld on the tranny mount bracket and use the subframes from a beretta. the biggest thing is the wiring though.
if your gonna stick with the ohv, id swap in an mpfi 2.2l. you need to swap the wiring harness and ecm, and put in a fuel pump from an mpfi car. that there will give you around 120hp, you can then use any performance parts for a 95-97 j body (header, intake, rockers, ect) to gain some more power.
Yuck, automatic.. I couldn't see trying to race a 2.0 with auto. That can't be very fast.
sharkey: We have to use the engine that matches the VIN. We can swap it out if it blows but it has to be another of the same type.
McClenny: This year is the first year they started allowing standard transmissions. It doesn't make much difference in speed because at the 2 tracks we race at you only uses first or second gear.
So what can you modify and what can't you modify? Are there limitations?
what about top end swaps (like the head up)??? if your able to swap the head, you could swap to mpfi.
if they dont do engine tear downs and cc the engine, you could swap a 2.2l in and say its a 2.0l. unless they tear ya down, they wont be able to prove its not. if they check block numbers, you could build a 2.0l block with 2.2l internals. i wouldnt realy consider this cheating. its not like your gaining huge power by doing this. the rule is likley in place to stop people from doing insane engine swaps, like a crx going from a d15 to a b18 or a k20 (or dropping a w41 quad 4 into a j).
