I bilt a 91 cav stock car for a new class at the local speedway ( it is a class for kids 13-19) my 13 year old is doing well but needs a little more speed. The track is a large 1/2 mile dirt track, rules call for 93 and back 4cyl automatics. It has a fresh valve job and the cat converter removed. In second gear the motor is screaming but drive isn't enough, any suggestions would be helpfull. Thanks........
Are you allowed to use a different final drive ratio? That's the equivalent of the rear diff gears. If so, you can look for a trans with a numerically higher or lower final drive ratio. If the RPO sticker is still around, it can be decoded to figure out what's in the car now. It's probably easiest to change the trans to change final drives, although a trans rebuilder should be able to swap the gears for you if your trans has something special.
The 92-93 MPFI engine has more power and torque than the TBI engine. The long runners and larger plenum / throttle body work well to help the engine throughout the power range. If you're allowed to swap to mpfi that may help the situation considerably. The stock throttle body on the TBI engine is fairly small and probably doesn't help matters at all.
