Asked this same question on the 3rd gen forum, but no-one's stepped up to help me yet. Wondering how difficult it would be to swap an auto for a 5sp on a 3rd gen 2.2. Looking to pick up a 3rd gen with a CNG conversion, but I hate auto's. Are we talking major mod or easy swap?
the swap is relateively simple all depending on what year you are working with. Assuming it is a phase 1 3rd gen, the only dificulty you will encounter is welding one of the trans mount brackets to the subframe..... this REALLY doesn't belong in this forum though.. it should be moved to the transmission forum.

Probably won't get an answer there either, since its been asked so many times.
i think all you need to do is weld the mount bracket on. you want to find one with a 3 speed auto so you dont need to change anything pcm or wiring harness related. swapping from a 4 speed auto adds a lot of work.
Ahhh . . . the transmission forum. No wonder I wasn't getting any search hits!
Thanks guys. 2nd gen forum is definately the best!!!
OK. Help me out here - what are the years for 3rd gen phases?
there realy isnt different phases for 3rd gens. i guess you could say that 95-99 is phase 1, 00-02 is phase 2, and 03-05 is phase 3, but i dont think anyone realy refers to them like that.
Looks like 2000 and earlier would be the way to go then. After 2000, Chevy made all Bi-fuel cavy's with the 4 spd auto.
Thanks again.
