I am looking for a 3.1 turbo for sale. There were only about 2000 of them made.
try the classifieds, since you're not allowed to buy/sell things through the regular forums.

I have seen two different GPTs go for sale locally...... or do you want just the turbocharge off one?
If that is the case, you can just buy a T28 off ebay and make a new downpipe?

are you guys saying that there was a gm made car that came with a 3.1 turbo? as in factory. i have never heard of that before, that is not saying much as there is lots that i have not heard of.
yes, that's what they're saying. I found a turbo off of one for my sunbird... turbo is way small for a 3.1L but just right for the 2.0L

what type of car was it? this has me so interested. it seems like this would be the holy grail of the j-bodies. it it was in a j-body car. the potential of the motor would be huge.
It was in a Grand Prix GTP made only in 89-90.
its actualy a grand prix TGP. the cars were built by gm and modified by mclearen. they only came as an auto. the motor realy was nothing more than a different plenum and a turbo, however there is some info that sugests thicker head gaskets and a specialy treated crank. they were 205hp, and realy wernt that fast. 91 gm brought the 3.4ldohc out in the grand prix, so they junked the turbo motor.
My bad lol! I meant to write TGP but i typed to quick to notice
has anyone ever tied to get those parts from GM? i mean if you could still get the exhaust manifolds and intake plenum that would be prety easy to get your own system up and running.
I'm sure someone has tried, but I'm sure the few parts that GM has left laying around are worth gold to them, if they still have access to them any way. I know that for the turbo sunbird, I went in and priced a set of pistons.... Just pistons, and they wanted like $575 or something ridiculous like that. So I got on ebay and bought a whole new virgin block and pistons for $75.
If someone was to go that route, I would find a junked tgp and snag all of the used stuff. If you can even find a junked one...I would venture to say that it would be just as easy to simply go to a fabricator, and have the system built to your specs to begin with... Not to mention you probably wouldn't want to stick with the tgp turbo for the 3.1L anyway if you're wanting power there goes another $800... I doubt you could get much more than 250 HP out of the stock turbo at the wheels With and awesome tune. So you'd have like 4,000 dollars in a motor that could put your car *Maybe* to the 14.000 range... I don't know about you but $4,000 could build me one hell of a small block... I bet you could get into the 11's or maybe even 10's for 4,000 including the buy in on the car... Wait, what am I talking about... I've got over $3,000 in my sunbird, I bet i couldn't hit the 14 mark either... Maybe I oughta quit rambling so much.

The only problem with going to someone and have them fabricate and build the system, your gonna end up spending alot of money that way. Alot of money hahah.

not one person has mentioned that the 3.1 turbo from the TGP is NOT and i repeat NOT a bolt into a j body. The engine is but the turbo xover pipe would get in the way of the upper trans mount. So you would still have to get that reworked to get it to fit or remake the trans mount.
call a-1 auto wrecking in ogden utah. 450 bucks
who cares if it doesnit bolt in. make it fit
There's one near me that you could get CHEAP. It's in a junkyard called B&M Salvage in Elizabethtown IN. The turbocharger is missing though.
I found one if your in ny
1990 GRAND PRIX STE
6cyl turbo, auto trans, loaded, unique, needs rear brakes, must sell, $800 B/O Delanson, NY (518) 895-8866
Lets face it. Turbo's are cool !! But the instant torque and good h.p. of the 3.8 was a much better idea. Maybe I'm just too old, but I will always prefer naturally aspirated engines with larger cubic inches to make the h.p & tq. In my opinion, a 225 hp v-6 with NO turbo lag will always be better than a 230 hp 4 cyl with a turbine.
just my 2c worth.
But with a turbo motor if you want more power you can simply crank up the boost. Good luck doing the same N/A.
If you don't want turbo lag, go 3800 supercharged.

Thanks to 90z3400 for bringing up what I was hoping the whole time reading this someone would, as he mentioned, the TGP motor will not even come close to fitting in a J-body bay. You have to fab up new engine mounts as the manifolds, turbo, xover pipe, and induction pipes don't clear... And even then it's hella tight. It's a lot more then just a new manifold and a turbo, a lot has been upgraded and the wiring/ecm is different etc... but it's not even close to bolt in.
ONE memberI know of tried and suceeded... Lee - aka Really Fast Z24 - he had it, and had it running good.. but it wasn't fun. His buildup pics/threads may still be on here. It was a nice car. But in my opinion and I think eventually his too - it wasn't worth it. You're better off just using the TGP shortblock and then adding your own custom turbo kit and running it off standalone, like Curtis Walker of turboz24.com fame did.
If I had a desire to run a v6 I'd swap a 3400 in and turbo that or a 3800 like Racetech did and turbo that... screw the 3.1/2.8 entirely.
But the turbo 2.0 is still the way to go
