cant get above 2500-3000rpm

Hello I am new to this forum posting stuff, but I feel this is the best option for me. I am lost and cant think of anything that would cause this problem. Please help if you can.

I race a 1989 cavalier with a 2.0 with an automatic tranny on a paved banked oval racetrack. The car will not go above 2500-3000 rpm in 2nd gear. The TCC is already disconnected, don't hear any vacuum leaks, vacuum EGR appears to be working( with car running if you push diaphragm up car cuts out, when diaphragm comes down car returns to idle) Just replaced gas tank and pump looks ok and filter is almost new. I cant change trannies because thats what came with the car its part of the rules.

If anyone has any thoughts, ideas or suggestions would greatly be appreciated thanks.

it sounds like your tranny is shot, you cant even swap out a identical trans out of a 2nd cavi.

So it'll run to redline in 1st, then when it shifts to second it just won't go above 2500. What happens if you put it in third? Does it feel like a loss in power? Does it miss at that speed? Does it run hard until 2,500 in 2nd? I would think if the tranny's bad it would do the opposite, the engine would rev, and you would go no where. And I don't know why you wouldn't be able to put a new tranny in... even some junk yard one. how would they prove that you did change it? Most of these J cars have so many miles, they've been into multiple times. just my .02.

If it runs good in first but only limits in second gear, I would think it's not cat being plugged, the last cat that I saw was plugged with peanuts, it still ran, but missed and sputtered through out the rpm range, while limiting top RPM simply because it couldn't generate enough power to overcome the friction.

car has no cat - its straight piped down to front of gas tank and turns out to driver side of car. Can change tranny, just cant change from auto to manual.

Have you actually checked your fuel pressure?

You say "The pump looks OK?

I would guess lack of fuel or if not get into the ignition

but I'm really only guessing
