I have a 92 Sunbird convertible, 2.0L. I keep very detailed maintenance records on all my cars, including checking mileage at each fill-up. The car always got a consistent 28-29 mpg on my commute to and from work, which is a mix of city/hwy driving. Recently the car has dropped to a consistent 24/25 mpg. I have gone completely through the car, checking fuel pressure, off-car fuel injector cleaning and flow matching, plugs, wires O2 sensor, you name it. The car runs really well, but the mileage has not been improved one bit. I've had this car for a while, and the 28 mpg I used to get was very consistent over a long period of ownership. I'm left wondering if the 10% ethanol blend gasoline we have to burn here in Houston is causing the problem. It is hard to check this with a tank of non-ethanol blended gasoline because we're in such a large area that has to use it I don't know where to go to find gas that doesn't have it. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?
ethanol in cars that arent built for it will do that. i was watching something on television the other day on the ethanol blends and they showed they will slowly cause damage to the vehicle if they arent designed for that blend.
Ethanol will show worse gas mileage, it takes MORE of it to produce the same amount of energy as gasoline. And a 10% blend isn't really enought to hurt most fuel systems that are in good shape.

as someone who doesn't know much about ethanol im not gonna come on here and try to spread negativety of it. However I will say that ethanol burns cooler and you all know that cooler weather means worse gas mileage so who knows... possibly that could be a major contributor of the drop in gas mileage. I must say though, a megasquirt engine tune to run 105 octane E-85 would be awesome for any car!!
10% ethanol isn't enough to drop your mileage that dramatically. you probably have been running 10% since you have had your car it just wasn't advertised. you may want to check your cat. sometimes a plugged up cat can drop your mileage.
living a lie since 1988
you know there is 10% of ethanol is added to your gas
