got another re-manufactured head....
threw in all new lash adjusters, cam followers ect..
got my sponsor GEOFF at Colt Cams to grind me a custom ground camshaft, his cams work awesome and a # of companies use their cams! If anyone wants to get a custom cam cut please don't hesitate to PM me and i will send you a phone # to reach him @!
Cometic Head Gasket,

Greddy Type S Blow off valve

and a pic of the TGP turbo, can anyone else with this turbo determine if this is the correct one!?! .80 AR?!

I'd have to look at my GP turbo when I get home but I believe it was .80/.63 AR. It looks just about the same as the stock Sunbird turbo.
I'm interested in your Colt cam if you want to email me the info at olzkng@aol.com. I had a custom cam ground over the winter but I wasn't happy with it. Have you run yours yet?

Well was it an enjoyable 10 minutes? Ha ha ha.
Seriously though I would be interested in a little more aggressive camshaft for mine. The one I had wasn't a lot larger than stock but idle vacuum was way down so it made my ECM unhappy. I'd like more lift with barely more than stock duration.
You'll love the GP turbo by the way. It made my car scream! I moved on to a larger unit now but the GP one is great for the size, price and ease of installation.

it was already on the car but the car ran on 3 cyl's, the 10 mins of it revving to 2000 RPM to break in the cam was awesome!!!

Re: lil bit of work....
Wednesday, July 19, 2006 9:45 AM
well let me do this over i just used RTV cause thats what was used on my motor before. do you know what PSI can be ran on stock N/A internals

Re: lil bit of work....

Aaron is right. After you bolt on the rear main cap you're suppose to squeeze RTV down the sides in those two grooves. I'm paranoid about oil leaks so I put gasket shellac on the sides of the cap and on the face where it bolts down. After it's torqued up you squeeze the RTV in. Do you have a service manual bro? They're a big help on these kinda things and are mega-cheap on ebay.

i don't actually have the svc manual for this car i use alldata and alldatadiy... here's what i did, i pre-loaded those grooves w rtv and then loaded the main cap up into it, so the next q, anyone with the cometic Headgasket have a different torque # that i should be using?

I'd love to see a comparison in lift and duration to the stock cam vs this custom grind.
I don't know the stock specs.

update: Top end back together, head on, turbo re-hung all cooling/oil lines hooked back up,
to use the cometic headgasket i used the copper spray gasket coated LIBERALLY on BOTH sides of the gasket.. (was suggested to me by an associate of mine who runs a 9 sec turbo civic.. have the charge pipes to re-run, wiring to hook up, fill w fluids, hook up downpipe, bolt down valve cover, re-time the motor and that should be enough to get me to the firing stage again

Are you ever going to come down here so I can see it in person?

Re: lil bit of work....

They say to squirt RTV down the side grooves after the cap is installed because as you fit the cap into the block the RTV is going to be displaced from one of the surfaces. Hopefully you'll be all right.

Cometic never told me to change my head bolt torque when I bought mine. Usually the head bolt or stud dictates the torque so you should be OK. There may be info about it on their website though.

If your 9 second Riceman buddy is using copper spray you should be okay too though Cometic coats the gasket with rubbery stuff and they tell you not to coat it with anything. That copper spray is as sticky as hell!!

The stock cam is about .440" lift and 191 duration at .050." I tried emailing your boy at Colt cams but he's not responding. Maybe I shouldn't have said it was for a Sunbird.

Get a service manual off ebay will you cheapie! There's a bunch of good info in there.

James I'm in Wakefield if you ever want to compare notes. I'd love to talk with you about your suspension work and brake conversions.

Thanks for the info on the cam guy. I'll wait till next week before I write him off.

Yeah, I knew James was planning his date with you but figured I'd try to meet up
with him sometime too. We don't live too far from each other so it makes sense to me
that local guys should trade ideas and help each other out. I've actually considered the
road race thing like he does after I get this drag racing thing out of my system. He seems
like one of the best people in my area to talk to about J-body handling. Someday we'll
meet up maybe.
Can you let me know when your car is running as to how that cam behaves? I'd love to
know lift and duration and vacuum readings.

Actually we all should meet up.. drag Shannen along with ya, get James out here too and Dan (juicedz4) lives 30 min from me and I see him all the time too... could be quite the meet. We've got a great local drag strip that's very lax on rules and cheap, and a pretty decent SCCA club as well for solo II etc... Hmm.. perhaps our town

tony I'm about to write up an email with the overview of the various upgrades I've done this winter since you asked. A teaser if you will befor eI make threads on them.

Tony- I didn't know you lived in Wakefield......

Anytime you want to get together, just PM me.

I'll be heading out to the Rochester area again sometime in the future, I've talked to Dan about it already.

That would be some meet. Most of the fastest and best handling 2nd gens in the world, all in one place!

Re: lil bit of work....

Now that would be a great J car meet What track would we go to Jim? I've been to Lebanon Valley once and might go again for Hemmings latest Musclepalooza in September. Either that or a friend's Olds club is renting LV for their drag day at the end of September too. I definitely want to go racing again when the weather gets cooler. Whenever I go I'll try to have Shannen with me to oversee the ECM tune. He's the computer guru.

James- Sounds good, I'll email you on a free weekend. I'd love to upgrade my suspension and brakes sometime. I have the 92- up front brakes and some basic suspension improvements but would like it to handle and stop better. I don't think I'd go as hardcore as your car but SCCA racing looks fun so who knows? Whereabouts in Mass are you?

Have I now hijacked this thread? Sorry Justin!

Tony:

It's about 45 min drive from my house. Wednesday night racing is $10, fri/sat/sun is $12, lol... it's so cheap. Plus, they no longer have a sponsering sactioning body, which means they don't really adhere very rigidly to rules... Like if you bust into the 11's they might let you have a few runs before they boot you for not having a cage etc.

Glad to see everything is working out. I'd really like to see a video of how the idle is and how it pulls with that new cam. I'm not very happy with the current cam and I'd like to get something cut to my own specs.
