Do you mean the actual fuel sender or the combined fuel pump and sender.

I am puzzled why you feel you have to clean it?

Usually if it is not working it needs to be replaced.

If I was faced with this problem I would only use gas (Carefully)

I recall Sulphur additives in the fuel damaged lots of fuel senders in the past.

Could you give a little more detail

the gas guage moves around alot. more than the usual and thats the only thing that i can think of that would make it do that. the fuel sending is exspensive and i wanted to know if its not working correctly would it affect the gas and the guage.

I like that, Chris.

There can not be too many people who have the sender resistor handy to photograph!

Hi Hydeyoshi

the fuel sender is just a variable resistor and as Chris says it's job is only to make the fuel gauge read how much fuel is in the tank.

A float in the tank (it's part of the sender) moves a contact over the resistance, which Chris was holding in the photograph.

The resistance should vary from 0 (Zero) ohms when the tank is empty to 90 ohms when the tank is Full, i.e. the float moves the contact dependant on how much fuel is in the tank

When the Fuel sender reads any resistance value in between these figures the fuel contents gauge will read somewhere in between Full and Empty.

The sender will NOT effect how much gas you use per mile, other than maybe leaving you stranded if it is not reading correctly.

Hope this helps
