What is required to swap from a 2.8 V6 in an 1989 Z24 to a 3.1 V6 motor? Will there be any ECU problems?

4 Cams...32 Valves...5 Liters...This Could Get Fun!
all you need to swap over is the egr valve and the 3.1l will run off the 2.8l ecu without issues. the 2.8 uses a vacume egr were the 3.1l is digital.
cool all the mounts and stuff are the same too right

Well xls2004: The best bet is to do I would get the ecu computer swaped, Sometimes the stroke may not be same from the 2.8L to a 3.1, Everyithing should bolt up, Like I say you may need to mods a few things, I know when I swaped 2.8L 89 tempest motor, To a 89 cavalier I had to use the tempest ecu, And wiring harness, To keep things in order. I had to convert the transmission module plug port, Other wise everything worked prefect. 3.1L is by far a better motor the crank is more durable then the 2.8L.
the crank is made of the same material, and all 85+ 2.8l got the big main journal cranks, so no difference in durability. the only difference in the motor is the stroke. i know at least 5 people that have swapped 2.8- 3.1 and used the 2.8l computer, just had to put the 2.8l egr on. you dont need to swap the harness and ecu.
all the mounts are the same 2.8-3.1
Just like i said to a member on V6Z24...
It's a direct bolt in, just pull the 2.8 out, bolt the 3.1 to the old tranny and drop it back in.
you'll have to use a few things over from the 2.8 like the throttle body, EGR and the vacuum line setup that runs under the plenum. Everything else is the same and will hook up/bolt on perfect.
depends on wht the motor comes out of.probably have to swap bracketsand just get a 3.1 chip out of a 90 or later cav. mine came from a regal and took forever cus i had to tear it down and put my brackets on
