Hi, I am interested in swapping out my 2.0 engine to a 3.1 in my 1993 sunbird automatic, but i dont know where to start. Has anyone done this swap before and can anyone give me some information about doing it. Are the auto transmissions the same for these engines. How much would the swap cost in all and is it worth it. Any information would help.
-Thankyou
yeah it's worth it. just make sure to have a donor 3.1 cavalier or sunbird thougha nd everything will go smoothly, same engine mounts same shifter lengths easy as hell.
You will need the engine, tranny, computer and fuel pump. Possibly the fuel lines. Everything bolts right in.
fuel lines you wont need, they are the same, just make sure the motor has the rubber lines hanging off it. the tranny from the 2.0l wont bolt up, so your need a tranny aswell. you will basicly need
-engine
-tranny
-wiring harness and ecm
-rad
-exaust (or get custom built)
-throttle cable
-air box
For exhaust, all you need is everything back to the catalytic converter. I looked it up at work, the v6 and 4cyl sunbirds can both use the same cat...
Yeah, probably need the throttle cable, too...lest your gas pedal hang a the floor because the v6 cable is so much shorter...
The Sunbird 2.0 tranny will not bolt into any other engine in the GM line. You will need either a Cavalier 2.2 tranny or the 2.8/3.1 transmission from a Cavalier. A Beretta tranny might fit. I havent found out for certain either way.
any 2.0l ohv (not ohc), 2.2, 2.8 or 3.1l tranny will work. the tranny can be out of anything, including a beretta (only if its the motors listed, a q4 tranny wont work).
Beware, though. The 2.0 and 2.2 trannys arent designed to cope with the power and torque of a 6cyl, and are more likely to fail than a v6 tranny would.
