hey guys......Im in a bit of a pickle......I recently finished installing all of my polyurethane motor mounts and I discovered that there is a motor torque stut mount missing.....Ive been battling with engine movement since I bought the car....I cant seem to eliminate the rediculous amount of engine bob under initial torque.......the motor will bob at a steady 1500 rpm.......it will not stop bobbing until you give it more gas or get off the gas completely......SO I figured I was missing a mount and sure enough I went to lordco and discovered that there was an additional lateral engine torque strut mount that Im missing......I dont even know where it would mount......the mount is about 14 inches long. Does anybody know where this thing goes.....what do i need to do to keep this motor still?!??!??
that mount goes from the back of the tranny to the passenger side subframe. that mount isnt used on all years of cars, so make sure your subframe has the bracket on it for the mount.
i dont even know what this mount does or why gm used it. iirc, it was only on automatics, and i dont beleive ive seen them on phase 2 cars
well ive been told that they were on 88.....89.....and 90 sunbird turbos.....apparently its used to resist lateral.......(side to side) movement.....i think this may be what i need.........cuz all my mounts are poly urethane.......including my dogbone and yet the motor still bobs.
manual transmission cars never had this torque arm. there is no place to bolt it on a 5 speed case. on an suto, there s a bolt boss in the back of the case for it.
Anyone know what the solution is......i need to stiffen this thing up......and all my mounts are already polyurethane......
welp Ive just finished fab'n up a solid torque strap to replace my torque strut......The new solid strut is made of a metal 5/8" threaded coupler.....with 2) 2" x 5/8" bolts threaded in both sides......with 1 1/2" x 1/2" threaded couplers welded across the head of the 5/8" bolt heads.......a couple of lock nuts on there and it works great...........a way stiffer ride....smoother shifts.
Where did you get your poly mounts?

J body performance......im disappointed with my trans mount tho......its seems like the rubber has come ondone from the center bolt shaft......and now theres play where Im getting my motor bob from.........Anyone have any idea how to dampen this a bit......my dogbone ended up being too solid......so i lost it and now im looking to stop the motor from coming up.......(tranny mount) .....
How much movement are you seeing? I have a hole in my hood so I can see the engine movement. I have 2" or so of movement rearwards when I take off or it shifts. How much are you seeing? Yes, that long link is only on automatic cars but I've seen it on a couple of 90 turbo birds.

where did u get your mounts from ? Need a set myself
I got the mounts from J body performance........
hey tony, where would you be inclined to put a damper between the motor and chassis.......any idea where it would be
structurally safe......I see that there are many unused mounting holes at the back of the tranny.....any idea where
exactly the automatic mounts goes? that would be a good clue to me as to where the movement is coming from.........cuz this is
..........
Let me think... I haven't been under my car in a while but on the pasenger's side of the frame rail area near where it bolts to the floorpan there should be a mount location with a slotted hole. As I recall it's slotted but I forget if it's 2 flat plates or if it's a 3 sided box. Anyway one end of the link goes there and the other goes to a boss that's above the downpipe as I recall. Like I said I haven't been under my car in a while so I'm gong off memory. I could take a picture off a spare tranny I have if you need. Or if you want to wait I could crawl under my car someday soon. It might be a while though.
I was leaning toward the front of the engine since the frame rails are closer together and it's easier to work up there than at the rear. Too much crap at the tranny side!! Like I said I haven't been under my car in a while but I was thinking you could bridge both front frame rails and attach a chain or cable there. I don't even know how much that'll help really.
I know if Slow is reading this he's probably thinking "I've been telling him we need to put together a traction bar system. Why is he wasting time limiting the engine movement?" LOL.

haha.....it just seems like this motor moves a little too much......im thinking the motor may be moving up and down in the tranny mount.....its seems that a 1" gap has developed overtop of the center pin on the tranny mount.......thats the only mount that shows a bit of play.....
