Just wondering on the availability of these cars.
Contemplating a swap in someone's car from the n/a 2.0 to the turbo 2.0.
How long have these engines been known to last?
-Thanks
They can last a long time. Mine's got over 200k. Most don't make it due to poor maintenance or someone trying to raise boost without the proper tools.

Someone I know may end up swapping a motor like this into her '93 Sunbird.
She does have the 3 speed auto, and would like a 5 speed, but that may be too much work. Did the 2.0 Turbo ever come with an automatic tranny? If so, was it the same 3 speed?
With these cars, did they come equipped with the same fuel pump and tank?
Basically, what all needs to be swapped over? I've done a few searches and didn'ts see the information.
*Just out of curiosity, what boost pressure does the T25 create on these motors in stock form? What kind of power can these engines/transmissions take before they're compromised?
Thanks for your help.
Both auto and manual trans were available. There are differences in the blocks depending on the trans but that can be fixed. Same 3 speed auto in all J cars to '95. Turbo 5 speed cars recieved a Getrag / Muncie trans. NA Sunbirds recieved a weaker Isuzu trans. The Isuzu trans will work and will even handle mild performance use.
Stock boost was somewhere around 7 psi. Mine's at 17 with tuning which is probably the limit for the OE fuel system.
The 93 'bird is pfi but I don't believe it uses the same fuel pump due to the lower power output of the NA engine. Check at partsamerica.com and see if they list the same pump for both models. You'll need to change engine, ecm, fuel lines, intake tube, exhaust head pipe, ??? The wiring harness can either be modified or swapped. Manual trans swap was detailed by Protonus a couple of years ago, maybe in the 1st gen forum.
The Getrag 5 speed is ok to 200 ft/lbs of torque. hp = torque * rpm / 5252 so you can make the following hp and still be within OE limits:
rpm hp
1000 38.08073
2000 76.16146
3000 114.2422
4000 152.3229
5000 190.4037
6000 228.4844
7000 266.5651
8000 304.6458
I'm fairly certain that I'm making a wee bit more power than that. I suppose if the front tires were to hook up it might be more of a problem than it is now.
Also, Fiero guys are using the Getrag speed transmissions when they do a Chevy V8 swap with decent success. There's a bit more than 200 ft/lbs available from a warm 350 Chebbie.

the fuel pump will be different no matter what as in 92 the gas tank size changed along with the fuel pump and such, you could probably get away with using the stock pump as its the same pump whether its a v6 or 4cyl 92 lists a different part number but 93-94 has the same part number whether its a 2.2 OHV 3.1 or 2.0 OHC
The Turbo 2.0 was on average 12% of the motors on Sunbirds from 88-90...
The getrag is good for WAY more power then that, curtis walker has proved it over and over. And when it finnaly did break it was just the diff.
Dont' use the stock fuel pump. There is a drop in wahlbro 255 replacement that works awesome.
i have a 2.0 non turbo, will the getrag 5 speed swap out for my trans, its already a 5 speed, just not the one from a turbo.... how much better will they be? and where can i get one cheap? thanks
"Hondas are like tampons, every pussy has one!!!"
You need a 5 speed which bolts to the Sunbird OHC block. It's different than the V6 or the quad 4 bellhousing pattern.

Yea. Your answer to a turbo in an Auto.. YES there is I know my one friend had a 89 Sunbird converiable LE with a 2.0L turbo!
Of course they came with an automatic transmission. I have one. It needs another gear pretty badly though. Overdrive would be great on long trips.

Yeah, autos can really eat up fuel. The only way I know to get overdrive would be to get a trans from a 2.0 or 2.2 Daewoo (yes, Daewoo). But the trans is electronically controlled so you'd need to locate a pcm which works with a turbo application and will control an electronic trans.
