steering column swap question
Friday, October 20, 2006 7:53 PM
my 89 column:
AT, w/tilt, column mounted wiper switch, w/delay wiper

the 1990 column i brought home from the junkyard
AT, w/o tilt, column mounter wiper switch, w/delay wiper

is this possible? what mods do i need to do, if any? theres a cable that came from the wiper switch to a connecter that says "PED 5" and "PED 7" on my old column but the replacement doesn't have it; what is it?

please help because i may sell the car and would like to have this settled

If the column with the mystery cable has cruise and the other doesn't, the cable is likely for cruise.

PED and a number are often found on GM electrical connectors. Doesn't usually help much.

The column swap is possible. Should bolt back up without too much trouble.

Yes, you can change the cruise lever but the wiper switch might be different.

What you do with the knob is your business.

ok i installed everything and put a new ignition cylinder that i have a key to into the column but its not working

theres a thin metal rod that connects the ignition cylinder to a metal and plastic piece that has 2 sockets for electrical plugs to connect into. when i connect everything, the rod doesn't reach far enough unless the key is turned ALL the way (where it would normally be cranking) and its not cranking

and my lights and stuff don't come on, is that all wired through the column?

The "metal and plastic piece" is the ignition switch. It's not adjuatable. The rod has an "L" at the bottom which fits into that switch. The dimmer switch is bolted to the same lower bolt as the ignition switch. There's a rod to push on that, too. The dimmer sw is adjustable.

To line up the ignition switch, remove the dimmer switch first. It's not fun to do in the car but you can look at your tilt column to see how everything fits together. With the dimmer switch off you can loosen the lower stud and the upper bolt and remove the ign sw. With the switch out you'll see a small round hole in the plastic housing. You can use that hole and a piece of wire to lock the switch in one position, I believe it's the "off" position. Once the switch is locked you can install it. Put the key in the cylinder so it can turn, insert the "L" from the rod in the switch, and install the stud and bolt which secure the switch. Once the switch is bolted in you can remove the piece of metal.

After the ign sw is in you can install the dimmer sw. After I put the switch over the stud I usually make sure the top of the rod is in the dimmer lever (check that the rod moves when you pull the lever) then put the bottom of the rod into the cup on the dimmer sw. Tighten the nut some so the switch doesn't move unless you move it. Slide the switch up so the rod just puts a little pressure on it then tighten it.

The ign switch and rod from the tilt column may be different than non tilt. You should probably keep those pieces separate if there's any question.

non tilt columns are NOT compatible with tilt vehicles. the rod with the L at the end is a different length in the two types.
