Anybody know how racing harnesses bolt up into your car do you need a roll bar or do you have to get custom brackets made or anything ?

in my vert mine anchor to the upper seatbelt location for where the rear seat was...

however to do it properly in a coupe yes you need a cage or in the very least a harness bar.. now the real question what do you need harnesses for? is it for looks or for something functional. at the very least please make sure that the harnesses you get are SFI approved. RCI corbeau, Seat, thompson ect....

If you're asking, you likely should not have them. There are very specific rules about how a harness can be mounted that won't end up killing you in an accident. If the company you have harnesses from doesn't provide you with information about how they can be mounted, then your harnesses are likely not up to snuff either. You do not need to have a cage, but you do need to know what you are doing.

i wanted to put them in my car to acutually use them i didn't get them yet so they might come with directions for installation i don't know just thought i would ask if you can hook them up without a bar

make sure you know what your doing when you install them. improper installation could leave you paralized or dead in an accident.

that being said, you need to ancor the shoulder harness as close to flat with the top of your shoulders. you can ancor it to to the floor under the back seat and run it between the top and bottom cushions. still, the best way to mount them is to a rollbar or harness bar. DO NOT IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE ANCOR THEM TO THE FLOR DIRECTLY BELLOW THE SEAT.

i have driven street cars with 4/5 point harnesses, and i find them to be a pain in the ass. if you have them tight enough that they will be effective in a collision, it leaves you unable to shoulder check.

I would never drive on the street with harnesses and no roll bar, and I'd think twice about it before taking it out on the track. If you roll, you have no place to go, you just get crushed. At least with a shoulder belt, you can slip out to the side. I would never drive or ride in any car with 4 point harnesses, simply because theres no sub-strap and the thought of having my insides smashed together doesn't sit well with me.

so would it be better to just use a shoulder belt at the 1/4 mile track ?

well, yes it would, unless you are running fast enough to need a 5 point harness (and thats 11.49 and quicker), but then you also need a safty jacket and 6 point cage.
