How do u install a convertable top?
Thursday, November 30, 2006 7:29 PM
I'm ordering a top tomorrow and I can't afford to pay someone to put it on so me and my bro's are gonna try to do this ourselves. If anyone has any instructions I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

I forgot to mention I have a 1988 Sunbird Convertible Turbo.

Chiltons manual goes over it. It is a pretty time-consuming and delicate process...

Anyone have a source for the plastic strips that the top is stapled to?

I did mine 4 1/2 years ago and will never do one again. It was a real pain to do right, and it took tons of staples and a really good electric stapler. It also took hours too, though I am glad I can drive and stay dry.

so u have to staple the top? I think I'd better let a professional install it. Do u know about how much that will cost?

Couple hundred if you can find a cheap place...

I've paid to have a top put in. Top material was $200 and installation was another $400. All the shops in this area get the same price.

This time (different car) I've got a complete ragtop car to strip. I'll take out the entire frame and change it over. The frame bolts in but the fabric in the rear still has to be stapled in. It's worth trying if it saves me $400. But I can tell already that the key is finding the right stapler and the right staples.

The fabric also staples in the front as well. I then recommend using seal all under the staples, and a GOOD electric stapler, along with coated corrosion resistant staples.

click on convertable tops on the left side, then read down a little and it will say something like - instalation instructions for domestic cars

also they have some generic stuff there that you might look at too for instalation
