I'm going in a straight line... and damn near nothing else. I want to get rid of power steering but I don't feel like replacing the rack. I was just going to drain the fluid. and remove all the line..... I shouldn't have any problem other than a heavy wheel right?

I'm quite confident that it is going to be a different part. I have been looking up manual steering racks and they look to be pretty cheap... I may go that route. I know they feel better than a drained rack.
All I'm looking for is to find out if it is going to make any aweful noises or if it will fail easilly. If not I will just use the drained rack and my own pulley/ bracket.

i dont thing the draind fluid rack is gonna mke noises or fail, they seem pritty stout.
Didn't see this thread earlier.
Manual rack best imo.
If using the power rack, tie the two power steering hose fittings together with a piece of line. This seals the rack from moisture but allows the air to move into and out of the hudraulic fluid chambers. Plugging the holse can cause the rack to feel locked up.
-->Slow
I got a hole in my rack shortly after installing the new one (old ps rack blew a hole in the accordian) and it was unbelievably hard to turn. Doing a shallow left turn required a hard turn, a slow speed 90 degree right turn required both hands and a good tap on the gas...
Best to just get a manual rack. The swap isnt that hard.
4 bolts on the firewall, 2 in the steering column, and 2 on the tie rod ends...
I could have sworn that I heard someone (Protonous maybe???) say that when you switch over to manual rack and pinion that you have to change onver the steering column shaft also because the intermediate shaft had a different spline/setup???
Trying to become the most modded out N/A 2nd gen sunbird 4 cylinder on the org with a..... screw that, I'm going turbo!!!
2.Slow OHC I4
Ported cylinder head, intake and exhaust
Relocated IAT with a custom WAI with a 6x9 K&N conical filter
All this, and I still can't go fast.............yet!!
steering columns make me irritable and i become short with loved ones.
last week it caused me to strike my wife............ then i find out my wife's been dead for 6 years!
WHO THE HELL DID I HIT?
When i converted Doomie to manual I just left fluid in it and tied the 2 lines together. I then opened the PS pump, took out the guts, only left the bearings, added some tranny fluid, for the bearings, reinstalled.
It was a bitch to steer, and after a year of it, the internals of the steering column blew apart in the tilt mechanism and now the steering column is loose as hell and 'flops' around. Still steers, but the wheel can move left/right/up/down 6 inches in every direction.
I ditched for a manual rack a little while ago simply because it looked sloppy. I'll have updates around spring with this car. The build has been slow but it is going to be one of the fastest cars on the site. Right now, converted to DOHC, working on a dry sump oiling system (yes you can buy a pre-made kit) and finishing some badass machine work on the bottom end.

Minion, I did the manual rack swap on my 89 Sunbird. Quadswap are my posts on this thread.

I can post a pic of the installed fabricated column if you'd like. Also I bought an extra set of the rubber cushions, and clamps for a manual rack from GM, because they weren't many left. If you can't find the parts at a dealer anymore, or find a manual steering donar car, email me. All the GM parts are listed on the thread.
