so today i pulled the plenum off my 3.1 and i come to realize it needs rebuilt, and i was wondering wat it would cost to rebuild, bored out, cam, injectors, port and polish top end, and some of the other basics????
cost on getting all of the parts together and all of the bits of work done depends on quite a few factors. will you be getting the block bored? by how much? is the shop local and do you know the folks there? will you be doing the reassembly yourself or having a shop do it for you?
how extensive will the head work be? will the manifolds be port-matched to the heads?
a complete rebuild kit can be had for not too much cash outlay, and, depending on the kit, should have most everything you'd need, from a stock profile cam to the gaskets, bearings, et al. if certain parts aren't in the kit, the place with a rebuild kit can likely get any other needed parts for you at the same time. call around and see what's out there for ya'.
now i have to know, how can you tell the engine needs to be rebuilt by just removing the intake plenum?
Have you seen the turbo wagon?

i can tell it needs rebuilt bcuz the cylinders are black that i can see from the intake mani. and the compression is way low, al the cylinders but one are in the 60's.
Chris,
I am having my 3.1 rebuilt as we speak. It is costing me between $1,300 & $1,500 to do the shortblock alone. That price includes a complete rebuild kit, block cleaned & magnufluxed, bored .060" over, block decked, crank and rods reconditioned, rotating assembly balanced to 7000 rpm, and shortblock reassembled. It looks like heads and intakes may end up costing about the same based on what I plan to have done to them.
I'm sure that if you were just having a "stock rebuild" done, it would be alot less. My brother had a GM warranteed reman. engine installed in his '92 Sunbird for about $2,500.
Hope this helps.

thanx, but im doing the build myself so its going to cost less, my uncle has his own shop and thats where im doing it im just sending the block out to get bored and honed, and the heads to get a three angle valve job and p&p, im reasembling it myself so i figured like it would be a grand total of like 2k.
Fel Pro Top Top End kit (head gasket kit, just have the Valve seals done, have the bottum of the head leveld if warped, new waterpump with all the new gaskets and you motor is good for another 150.
