I like Castrol GTX high mileage, supposed to have better protection against burn off.

What oil was in it before?

If it works, heck, I would go with what is in it...

I kept the same oil as the previous owners had it it....and it does quite well...

You will here alot of crap from people about synthetic. I Just proved some moron I know wrong. I went from 1 year of running synthetic back to conventional oil. And guess what? Nothing! But I ended up going back, cause I noticed a difference on cold start ups. And I run castrol syntec 10w 30 all year round. When I bought the car it had 132,000 kms. I went straight to synthetic, back to conventional ( for the moron ) and then back to synthetic with no problems. One thing is for certain is that synthetic burns cleaner, and it bonds to great to the engine parts for cold start ups.

What you use depends on how well your engine has been taken care of. Does your engine have any oil leaks? I've read that if you have oil leaks then synthetic can leak faster than conventional oil, because it is more free flowing. It also costs more to replace it if it leaks. You shouldn't have a problem if you do run it, it just depends on if you are willing to spend the money for it on that car.

personally ... change your oil religiously, every 5000kms. I use brand name stuff, I believe it's all comparable(none of the cheap sh!@ thou no synth). Oh, uy the way, I also change the filter each time. Regards Irv

What do you ppl put in your 3.1L V6 J's?

I was about 2qts low so I put in some 10w30 Castrol GTX.

They didnt have any 5w30.

i use 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer, i buy a 4L jug of oil and an ac delco filter from the GM dealer, mostly because i work there and its cheap, i have no problems, on my cars anyway running 10w30 in the winter the oil pressure is too high on a cold start and i don't feel like having a seal blow out when its -40 out so i use 5w30, and ac delco filters are by far one of the best and reasonably priced as well

Your car doesn't burn to peaces if you switch back. It isn't good for your internals. The problem isn't in the actual oil but rather the detergents. Synthetic oils are capable of holding much higher levels of detergents and much more potent types than conventional oil because of its ability to withstand temperature without breaking down. That is why you can go so much longer without changing oil. Like with any chemicals, there are chances of reactions. Certain detergents in synthetics have reactions with certain detergents in conventional oil. The reaction causes the oil to break down prematurely which adds unnesesarry wear to your engine.
To changes oils you need to flush the engine.
Sure nothing happened on the outside of your motor, but I seriously doubt you pulled apart and analyzed your bearings and cylidner walls before and after switching.
If your friend is a morron, it's because of something else.

Castrol Syntec with a K&N performance gold filter. Pricey, but starts easier and seems to run cleaner. Weight depends on the temp where you're at. I live in Ohio (f'ing freezing during the winter, hotter than hell during the summer), so I use 5w-30 about half the year, and 10w-30 the warmer half. just flush the engine when you switch...I'm told it's not good to mix them.

10w30 Castrol Syntec and a Bosch oil filter every 3,000 miles works well for me, and definitely helps on cold starts.
