DOHC conversion??
Wednesday, February 14, 2007 9:51 AM
i have an 89 sunbird LE 2.0L non-turbo, and was wanting to convert it to DOHC, i know the vauxhall parts can convert it, but can avenger/neon parts convert it? i think they should, as they are basically the same 2.0L GM motor except DOHC in the avengers anyway... hope you can help, thanks in advance, look foward to hearing from all of you, thanks again, later

I have searched all over the place and I have found no relation to the chrystler 2.0 motor. Everything is off from the bore and bore center to the coolant and oil jackets.

I don't get this. I used to work for a Chevy dealer who would get calls all the time from people wanting us to do warranty work on Chrysler products. WTF??? I guess they both start with the letter "C" so they must be the same company. IDK...

Might consider Ecotec DOHC. All GM, parts available in the US, and will be made for several more years. The Vauxhall DOHC engine requires some imiginative solutions.

how easy is it to convert to DOHC from the ecotec though?

The ecotec does use an 86mm piston just like the LT3 but of course it has a longer stroke which means it should have a larger volume combustion chamber. I have an ecotec head that I will compare to an LT3 headgasket tomorrow to check how the bolts line up and check the bore center. I am also going to be taking some measurements on the rods and pistons of both engines.

US Built Ecotec is DOHC.
Sunbird engine is SOHC.

Eco uses chain, Sunbird uses belt. Prolly not too close as far as bolt on and go. I believe Eco rod is longer... I am fairly sure I checked this trying to find a cheaper source for quality rods. Love to see actual dimensions though.

As far as difficulty in the swap, get a complete engine, fab mount points, make it fit. Might be easy, might be tough. But it can't be as tough as installing an engine with almost no support in the US (Vauxhall).

You'd probably be very happy with a conversion to LT3. You're running NA now. A little boost will make your life much more fun and all the parts to convert the car can be found in junkyards. It's going to be an easier swap than a DOHC conversion and there's plenty to do with that engine before you run out of fun.

yea... i say screw it, im stayin SOHC too much work to go DOHC, not worth the work for the little bit of gain... on SOHC, im just gonna get a big cam, oversize valves, 3 angle valve job, ect. i am going turbo, garrett T3/T4 , oversize pistons, full MSD ignition, and does anyone know how much PSI of boost i can run if i swap out the N/A parts for sunbird turbo parts? and will the turbo parts fit in the n/a block, and also.. will the getrag trans from the turbos bolt up to my motor, and the mounts i have? if anyone has turbo bottom end parts and wants to sell them, just let me know a price and ill get back to you as soon as i can, look foward again, from hearing from you, thanks to everyone, later

I have a complete bottom end, an extra set of pistons/rods, and msd6al + coil as well. I also have two heads, one ported with all new valves/springs/seals, one intake manifold, two turbo manifolds + stock turbos and pretty much any other motor part. I have no manual trannies though, only the one I am using. My auto DIED a horrible death. I also have manual and auto gauge clusters and an adapter to use a T3 on the stock manifold...... two cams, harmonic balancers, ect...
