rear bumper supports...

hi all.

just a question. my cavalier is in storage at the moment but i remember that before i put it away there was some kind of steel reinforcement that went along the very bottom lip of the rear bumper... any idea what the real name for this is?

i was thinking maybe "rear impact bar" but when i look up that part (on eBay etc) what i see looks like the actual steel piece that holds the bumper on, up top and not the bar that goes along the very bottom lip of the rear bumper... i'm just trying to get a few things together before i start working on it again but if i have to wait to look at it a little better thats fine too. i should have taken pictures before hand.

i just remember sticking my hand up there and it all crumbling in my hands. does it serve an extremely important purpose? or is it the type of thing i could just grind any remaining pieces off and it would look as if nothing was ever there? i'm mostly concerned about vehicle safety inspection issues.

thanks!

Theres only one piece of steel behind the bumper cover. Its called several different names, but the most common is "reinforcement". Its different between the Z and other models (the Z has "shock absorbers" that attach it to the unibody, the others are simply steel brackets). I doubt you'll find it on Ebay. The bumper cover yes, but the steel is another story. Does it serve a purpose? Yup. Thats what stops the car that rear-ends you from ending up in your back seat (in theory anyways). The factory part number is available on V6Z24.com in the Suspension forum in the FAQ.

cool thanks James.

the support itself is good, i had to trim a bit of the rubber off of it a little to get the Z bumper to fit.... but for some reason when i took the old rear bumper off (VL) there was 2 rubber things on the very bottom of the bumper with a rusty piece of steel attached to both of the holes with a clip.... but theres nothing under there to show what they were once clipped to. just a bunch of rust that fell out (crumbled in my hands).

the part that takes the impact is still there, it just seems like something used to be down lower around the very bottom of the bumper that i only have 2 rusty pieces of left that were still attached to the bottom of the bumper i took off...

i wish i had pics to explain better

thanks for replying!

lots of people call it a "rebar" or "bumper Rebar"
