Ive just finished putting a new head gasket on because my other one melted.........today I got my car back from my mech and I noticed that even after a while driving my car still thought it was cold.......so it would rev itself when i had my car in neutral at a stoplight. as if i just turned my car on....................I havent heard my engine fan in decades.....im beginning to think i have a major cooling problem.......I need help asap......i just put in a new stat.....so its not to blame.......is the temp sensor gone or something......help.
You need to figure out what temp it's actually running at. The stock guage is pretty useless so you need a real gauge or a scanner to tell for sure. The coolant sensor or fan switch could be N/G but you need to get some numbers to tell.

the ecm controlls the fan on/off. im guessing that the coolant sensor for the ecm has taken a dive. verify this by hooking up a scanner and looking at the data stream. the coolant sensor for the ecm is on the bottom side of the water neck.
my next question, did you put your t-stat back in? these cars RUN COLD
without it!
1st 1st gen on air.....
I mod'd mine with Relay switch to enable my fan as so as the key on.
But I have descover that the problem could be connect to the A/C relay or a problem with the A/C. I have never really had time to verify this tho..
The Best and easiest way to test for the fan is to do the ECM test and get the diagnotics code. When you go to short out the contracts and turn the key to the on position the fan will come on! If it doesn't the the FAN motor could be shot or the Relay could be buggered. Yea.. AND I changed the Water pump!
And I change my Temp sensor 2 twice with no differences! Change the Thermast and the oil pump.. It was a Nasty changing twice the oil pump! No the Problem..
I was told a while a go by a guy on here To Check The A/C switch.. Here is what the A/C does.
When you switch the A/C on The Fan should Come on!!!!!!!!!! If it doesn't then the problem is with the A/C control(AKA, Switch, Relay, or the A/C it's self)
So what I can figure is happen for a electronic point is the relay is held down so it need more voltage or current to enable this 1st Relay. So It will come on but not Till your Engine will be at the 2 bar from overheating! So you will need to replace the 2nd Relay.
ps this problem has costed me alot of money do to the overheating.. I had to replace the lifter do to them seizing up, seal's, fan motor, main relay for the fan, O2 Sensor, intake sensor, temp sensor, oil sensor, rad, had a frost plug blow out, oil pump, Head gasket( which I paid someone to do it) What a waste that was. other part i have replaced just because a cheap Fuel pump, and had to replace it again, so I got a new fuel tank and prem, fuel pump. Alt, some other sensors.
But In the end, I just reverse engineer the fan with a relay which that is pigback to the orignal Relay($10.00cdn)! And it has been working Assume. Bad part is the Fan will always be on when the Engine is running! So you might have to replay the fan. But it's a 50.00 cdn for a new fan! Which is better then the other problems and it easy to replace! I did it in the front of a canadian tire parkin lot and 10mins later it was done!
No more OverHeating Problems!! And is Running Great now..
So These Year I hoping to start mod'd it out with a bigger turbo, booster, Newer Maps sensor with a 2 Bar Rating, intercooler, body mod's, new wheels, my custom stereo, air intake, Somewhere do the road a new paint job!
PS.. Be thankful it a not a 98 Sunfire all the parts are 2 to 5 time more expensive plus more electronic parts. I know I have one of these 2! Just it's not a turbo yet!!
