Hello all!
issue:
oil pressure starts out fine when cold then drops slowly as the motor warms up until it bottoms out. I have replaced the oil pump and still have the same problem. Also put a mechanical oil pressure gauge in
I have read on this site that the cause could be my rod and/or main bearings. my question is (excuse my lack of knowledge) but how does rod/main bearings cause you to have low or no oil pressure? just wondering
Thanks!! just what I was looking for!
If the rod / main bearings have problems then you may be seeing damage as the result of a timing chain failing or having previously failed. Did you have a large amount of metal in the pan when you changed the pump? Also, if the rods / mains look ok then go to cam bearings next.
-->Slow
If the tollerence between the main and rod bearings, are to great and the oil thins out cause of the temp, you'll lose pressure.
its like drinking a milkshake through a straw its harder when its cold, but get alot more eazy when it warm
Thanks for all the info!! it has been a great help.
To get everyone caught up on the history of this problem I need to fill in some blanks. about 3 weeks ago the car made a clunk noise and stopped dead in its tracks I was able to cost into a parking lot. Got car towed home and started working on it. After speaking with some friends I decided to start with the timing chain. I soon found that the timing chain tensioner had broken into several pieces. The timing had jumped 6 teeth (forward) . I replaced the tensioner and re-timed the car. I inspected the oil pan and found large chunks of the old tensioner and a few small (no metal) . Checked and cleaned the pickup screen and put it back together. It was from that point that my oil pressure problems started. I have replaced the Oil pump and as of yesterday have the motor pulled and the rod's and crank pulled. The rod bearings and main bearings look ok. The motor does have 170K on it and I didn't see anything that made me think "Ok this is the problem" I was more left with the feeling of "Well F**K thats not it" I hope to pull the cam tonight. Hopefully I will get that "AHHH thats why" feeling tonight!
