So I just picked up an 88 beretta 2.slow and god is it. I'm not looking to make a racecar, just to make driving it bearable. I've heard people with 2.2's having good success with just a little port work and a milled head, which I'll prolly do to the Beretta but I was just wondering if anyone knew anything else that might help, any 2.2 parts swaps maybe (I have tons of 2.2 parts). Thanks for any input.
the question is how much money are you willing to spend?
**changes are here**
honestly, for the money you would spend on that, you may aswell just do a motor swap. if you want to stay 4 cyl, grab a 93-97 2.2l, get the wiring and ecm from a 93-94. everything will plug in, the only other thing you would need to do is change the fuel pump, as you woul be going tbi to mpfi. you could also do a v6 swap, a little more involved but everything would bolt right in. you weould pretty much need a donor car, or find a rather untouched car at a junkyard to strip everything from.
If you want to stick with the stock engine, a homemade CAI might net you a little more power (not much, if anything over even 1 HP, but engine response might pick up). I highly recommend swapping it out for something with a little higher output. I've been thinking of switching to a 2.2 OHV for my GT (2.8 V6 puts out only five more HP, and gets less torque that a '94+ 2.2, way better mileage, and the engine is lighter). Whatever you do, keep it around, the Beretta looks so cool. A bit of a cult classic, so to speak.

lol I'm not lookin to spend much, it was just a cheap gas-saver car but about $250 is about it, I do love th looks of it and I'd rather keep it a 4cyl just for the mileage factor. I had thought about tryin to swap in a 2.2 I have a few lying around. Just outta curiosity; how much of the harness is really different I mean wouldn't I just need the harness for the injectors and related stuff (computer, fuel pump, etc) because all the sensors (well there plugs at least) are the same as the 2.2 cars.
if you want to swap to a newer mpfi engine, you will need to swap the engie harness and computer. you can grab a 2.2l mpfi computer and re-pin the harness and wire in the injector wiring, but thats more work than its worth. it only takes a couple hours to swap a wiring harness, and im sure you could get one for $50.
Ok thats cool, just wasn't sure if I'd be easier.
Hey maybe one of you guys could tell me whats the difference in the 84-87 2.0 manual transmissions (5-speed) and the 88-90 2.0/2.2 trannies? Would they both work behind a 88 2.0?
the 2.0 has a different bellhousing than the 2.2 / 60degree V6. It won't even come close to bolting up...
I wouldn't spend any money on the 2.0, just change the oil and keep gas in it. It should last for a long time and get decent mileage. (mid 20's)
BTW, Scott on V6 is getting around 34 MPG-highway on a turbo 3400.. Moonwell gets around 30 MPG with a cammed N/A 3400. Smaller does not always equal better MPG
we are talking about a 2.0l ohv, wich is the predicessor to the 2.2l. it uses the small gm bolt pattern, wich is the same as a 2.2 and all the v6s. you are thinking of the 2.0l ohc, wich is a dawoo design motor and bellhousing.
Yeah sharkey is correct not the 2.0 OHC but the 2.0 OH
V the pre-2.2. So all the trannies for 84-89 2.0 OHVs are the same then?
^2.0 build book? That would be sweet, is step one to remove the engine and put in a 60* V6? lol.
why not get the exhaust manifold ported? It cant cost much, and Ive heard it does good on other motors.. Not sure what itd do with a 2.0 OHV... it was the best N/A mod I did to my 2.2, thats for sure. I doubt you could find a header for it, and a custom one would be more than 250 i imagine.
Pics of the motor? Ive never heard of a 2.0OHV, Id liek to see it if thats possible.
it looks like a 2.2l, but has a cast iron head. i used to own one, it was in the car i bought for a total of 12 hours after i bought it.
lol sounds like a real keeper then!
Yeah I will snap some pics if your really interested. I'm not sure if the cav was the same, I dont think it was but in the Beretta they made the intake tube and airbox with raised ribbs which match the valve cover so it actually looks kinda cool; Slow, but cool.
And I remember seeing that 2.2 headers fit the 2.0 so could I just throw on a early 90's 2.2 cast exhaust manifold to replace the crappy log one and maybe gain a few ponies?
Also, James Cahill I would actually like to see this build book if you could e-mail it or somthing whenever you get back to the computer its on I'd love to have a look.
we run 2.2 ohv in our race car. i have some custom made ross racing pistons very high compression and we use the eagle h-beams and a custom cam. with no head work and running a distributor and carb it put down 150hp at the wheels on the dyno last week
