3.1 swap
Monday, June 25, 2007 2:33 PM
swapping a 3.1 out of a 92 bird into my 91 ohc 4cyl.

Should I change the tranny? Or use the 4cyl one? Pros/cons of each if possible.

Also, if I swap the tranny, would the clutch from the original be the same as the new one?

tranny is different, starter location.
think you'll need to swap wiring and PCM too.

yah, i have a complete donor car, just wondering what the difference in trannys is. if i keep the one from the 2.0 will i just roast the tires all the time? etc...

The gearing shouldn't be so different as to cause constant burnouts or anything.
I don't believe the 2.0 and 3.1 have the same bellhousing bolt patterns, so that'd be an issue.

I'm still wondering about the difference in wiring previously mentioned. Different style VSS, maybe? Shouldn't necessitate a different computer, though...

you will need to change the tranny and clutch to the one in the 3.1l. the 2.0l ohc is a completly different beast than a 3.1l, and nothing is interchangable. you will also want to change the axles over, same wit the rad and possible the shifter cables and shifter. the wiring and ecm must be changed as its completly different. the engine bay harness should just plug right into the rest of the car without issues, everything should work just fine.
