Can I take OFF my AC belt?
Wednesday, June 27, 2007 8:05 PM
Will taking off my a/c belt disable my rear window defroster? The compressor clutch is making loud screeching noises and my a/c is useless so i want to take off the belt. Any wisdom to share.

No, but it will stop your water pump and alternator from rotating, the car will overheat and not charge the battery!!!

Disconnect the plug/socket connector on the A/C compressor, tape up the disconnected wiring harness and connector, this will disable the A/C compressor clutch circuit and stop the noise.

if it's the car in the sig (2.0 sunbird) then the A/C compressor is run off a V belt.. you can remove that w/o hurting anything.

unplug the low pressure switch if your compressor still engages right now otherwise when you remove the belt your going to get an idle change when you turn the defrost on

Go ahead and remove it. I took the belt and compressor off mine and just put a non air conditioned belt on and have had no problems.
