hey there, i am currently considering trading my 96 cav 2.2 to a guy for his 91 3.1 v6 z24, the z24 has 205 on the body and 105 on a new motor and tranny. is there any red flags i should look for? it currently is hesistating when you get on the gas, it is a 5 speed, he says it needs a tune up.
A tune up... That could mean a lot of things. From $20 in repairs to $200 in repairs. I would definitely take along a mechanically inclined friend to take a closer look. If it's just a couple minor things, take it. Gen 2s are way better looking than gen 3s anyways.

Look for rotted out rockers and rear fenders.
it needs plugs bad and the wires are cracked, so theres a missfire, and there is zero rust on it (southern car). any common mechanical problems with the 2nd gens to look for?
so as it turns out, there are lots and lots of electrical problems. no horn, power windows and locks dont work, the lights are rigged to a different switch because the stock location doesnt work. and the parking brake cable is snapped. i think im going to pass on this one
could just be the horn came unplugged, it happened on mine, it probably just needs a new switch for the headlights, I've also had to replace mine, and window switches went out on mine aswell, or could just need window motors. All of that stuff is easy to repair, but you will spend around $150-$200 to fix it.
later,
Jon

It could also be a flood recovered car. Look under the dash and if you see rust and/or mud then RUN away!

there is no plastic or trim under the dash... as a matter of fact theres no glove box either.
way too beat to be trading a '96 for, period.
