I just picked up an 89 Sunbird with a 2.0 and 5spd manual transmission. Its my junker work car but I want it to be reliable. I've done all of the basic tune up type stuff already and it runs amazingly for being 20 years old and having 257,000 miles on it! Anyway...
I would like to change the tranny fluid.
Why type of fluid does it take and how much?
I searched for a couple of hrs already and found nothing.
Any help would be great,
Thanks.
Gm synchromesh, and i think it's around 1-1.5 L but i don't recall.
watch for flying sparks!!!
It takes 20/50 motor oil.
ps. it says it on the dip stick.
no motor oil in a manual tranny...
gm syncromesh fluid
in otherwords...
GEAR FLUID...
i think it's like a 90w oil but it's gear oil not motor oil... looks different from motor oil & smells different than motor oil.
should be able to walk in local auto parts store & tell them you are changing the fluid in your MANUAL tranny & need new fluid for it... they will hook you up

i have an auto on the j bird , but on my subaru i have a stick and after trying like 5 different gear oils i use redline 75-90w ns without the friction modifiers . no lsd no need for friction modifiers
omg people. does nobody bother to look in the owners manual? (To the O.P. this is not directed at you but eveyrone else giving conflicting info)
it says right in there. You use synchromesh. it's that simple. maybe be pricey but it's good @!#$, and the $7/qt pennzoil synchromesh is exactly the right thing, and better than $15/qt from the dealer
