Engine Swap for 94 Sunbird

I have a 94 Sunbird with a 2.2L and would like to swap it with a more current 2.2 Ecotec or a 3.4L engine. A friend told me that I would have to change the subframe/engine cradle on the Sunbird in order to install either engine. Is this correct?
