does anyone know if this would work or know someone who has done it
It does not work.
I managed to buy a set of third-gen struts off a second gen owner - REALLY CHEAP - who'd bought them and tried to make them work.. but they didn't fit.

thx i figured id ask befor i bought some and did something stupid
They will physically bolt to the spindle, but have no steering arm (3rd gen is on the spindle near the bearing as opposed to the tube). They are a touch longer than a 2nd gen strut too. If you really wanted to, you could run an entire 3rd gen suspension up front (strut, upper mount, spring) as long as you attached a steering arm to the strut tube.
So yes, they do fit, but no, they won't work without adding a steering arm.
