has any one here changed a front wheel bearing just wanting to know how hard it is to change with the ABS on the car
I've done both front wheel bearings on my 01 Cavalier and they are extremely easy. Not much more to replacing these than changing brakes. Just take the tire off, remove the caliper housing with brakes, pull off the rotor (on my passanger side this was the only thing that slowed me down since it was kinda "stuck" on the studs), remove the hub bolt (cant remember what size, but I had to buy a new socket since its kinda big), pull out the bearing unit and instal the new one. Good luck!
1. Jack up and properly suppot car.
2. Remove wheel.
3. Remove brake caliper (use something to hang it up, you'll tear the hose otherwise), two 3/8 Allen bolts. Remove Rotor (hammer if necessary).
4. Remove the 26mm nut holding the axle in place.
5. Remove the 4 bolts holding the hub on. T50 Torx if I remember correctly.
6. Pull on hub. It will be rusted in. Also push on the axle at the same time (gentle tap with a hammer works well), do not pull hard, or push hard, on the axle, you'll damage it.
7. Put lug studs into new hub if necessary, don't reuse old studs. Push the new hub into place.
8. 4 retaining bolts back in. (forgot the torque, but it's alot)
9. Axle nut back on (180 Ft-lbs torque)
10. Put the rotor back on. Brake caliper back on. Something like 50 fl-lbs.
11. Wheel back on. 5 Lug nuts, 100 ft-lbs.
12. Put car back down.
Far from impossible, but not especially easy either.
ABS plays basically no role here. It's not attached to the hub at all. The sensor is attached to the knuckle, and the pickups are on the axle.
