Help with setup decision.
Thursday, January 19, 2006 7:18 AM
Trying to decide if I should go with the Tein basics, or a set of Koni Yellows and the ground control coil's. Any suggestions? I've got some horrible gap in the rear I'm talking l can fit my whole hand in between the top of my tire and the fender. I've got 17" wheels and I'm running 215's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Koni's will be more work. So if you want simplicity, so Tien. I personally would go with the Konis + GC though. You can order the GCs with any spring rate you want, and I'd want a custom rate. But that's just me.

More so then anything I want my car to not look like a 4X4 anymore, and I want something that can hold up to these nasty roads here. Problem being I think I'm going to have to lower the rear at least 2" to get where I need to be.

Either kit will hold up to the roads. Both can do 2" in the rear fine. They're very similar setups. And as you can see already, each person will prefer one or the other.

Yeah, I'm starting to like the Koni's just because they are adjustable. Thanks for your help guys!

tien is adjustable too.

also if your not familair w/ konis, the fronts are only inserts. meaning you have to drill out the bottom of your stock strut to release the pressure then cut the strut just above the knuckle so you can insert the koni. if you dont wanna do that, d-specs are full replacements

Pretty much every car I've ever raced in or worked on has had Tein equipment in one way or another, and I have to say that they are the sh*t. And the Basics are the same thing I'm going to install on my Cavalier, because like you, I want to rid myself of fender gap, and i'm getting into autocross, so handling is also important to me. THe Basics can go as much as 2.5" lower than stock, something that most options don't offer. And by the time you pay for Koni's and a Ground Control sleeve kit, you'll spend just as much or more.

I had the same question as you. I already have GC coilovers but I am debating on if I should sell the GC and go with a full Coilover set up?

it depends on what you wont to do.

if you wont to tinker with the car and like to try different things (spring rates, dampining rates, ride hight, exc.) i would go with a koni and ground control coilover kit. he canges his dampining inbetween runs depending on how much over or under stere he has. also during the year he tryed several springs. he has a spring set for rally cross and a separate one for auto cross.

if you wont to just put on the strut and be dun with it then the tein is the one. but by the looks of the tein basics they are a still a good coilover strut. the only thing that i see is on there site they didnt say that the dampiners were adjustable (the dampining rate of the strut), but when i looked at the super street they stated that the dampiners had 16 way adjustibility.

so in conclusion (i sumtimes dont say things clearly)

koni and ground controle kit
$590.00 struts
$400.00 gc coilovers
------------
$890.00 total

f spring rate (whatever you wont)
r spring rate (whatever you wont)

bad
-you have to put these together yourself (taking apart the frunt strut and inserting the insert)

good
-the strut dampining is fully adjustable
-spring hight is adjustable
-you can choose the spring rate and you can buy other springrates to accomidate the type of compitition you are doing

tein basic

$880.00 total

f spring rate (336 lbs/in)
r spring rate (224 lbs/in)

bad
-dampining is not adjustable
-didnt see avalibility of diferent spring rates (might be wrong on this one)

good
-the strut comes alltogether to through on the car
-hight adjustable

tein super street

$1,320.00 total

f spring rate (336 lbs./in.)
r spring rate (224 lbs./in.)
bad

-none that i see excep maby the price price
(remember you get what you pay for and this is the most expencive of the groop meaning
it has to be good)

good
-they are all together and almost jumps on to the car
-dampining is adjustable
-spring hight is adjustable

ps.

for the record i wish i went with the koni's and not the kyb agx. the koni's are a much
better product. remember to get the corners weighed after puting every thing on and an
alighnment. for some info on koni instalation and corner waighing check out grassroots
motorsports magazine. also online at (www.grassrootsmotorsports.com) go to the online articals and use the serch on there page (top left if i remember right)
remember to go with something you wont, not what other people tell you what you wont.
