Drums stuck
Sunday, April 30, 2006 7:34 PM
I have a 98 cav and the rear brakes need to be replaced. Take the wheels off and the drums won't come off. What would be the right way to get these suckers off? Most drums I come across are threaded so I could use a puller or a slot so you can reduce the tension on the pads. Is there anything I could do short of removing the brake line?
I appreciate any help.

they should just slide right off, but seeing that your car is a 98 your drums have prolly not been touched in a long while. My guess is that they are just rusted to the hub, no big deal, just get a BFH, pound on it a little, and itl come off in no time.

Ill make a sig someday

Make sure your ebrake is off.

I used to race cars, now I race myself.

Yeah, I painted my drums and calipers this weekend and had trouble getting my drums off as well. After I got the first one all prepped for paint I realized I had the e-brake on, the second one was a lot easier, haha.

You probably have to back the adjuster off since they're bell-mouthed. There is a slot on the bottom of the backing plate to stick the adjustment tool in. A flat screwdriver works just as well. Turn it a few turns in one direction, and if it gets tighter, turn it the other way, then they'll come off.

The shoes are probably stuck in the drum. Stick screw drivers in both sides, push in as hard as you can on the shoes, then pull drums off. Has always worked for me, and you don't potentially mess the adjusting up.

I didn't see any adjustment slot on the back of the drum. Surprised the hell out of me, but no the ebrake isn't on.
