Cutting coils??

Ok I have heard from every person I have ever met that this is bad, and read many posts about how terrible it is. I understand the geometry involved and why it would be bad and I don't think I would ever do it.

But this is my question, why if its so bad would Chip Foose do it on just about every episode of "Overhauling" on TLC? He seems to be a very knowledgeable person and if this was going to put the owners of the cars in danger I wouldn't think he would do it on national TV.

Did you know that the holes only natural enemy is the pile.

this came up in another post, someone said cause older springs are stronger, and can withstand the cutting, and removal of a few coils without changing it that much, something like that. im sure someone will ding in

Correct. Then again, those cars also weigh much more then our sport compacts.

Would you put springs made out of Aluminum on your Cavy? Maybe, maybe not.
It would depend on if you know that Aluminum suffers badly from metal fatigue, and tends to snap in half after it's been bent a few times or more. That's a pretty extreme example, but it gets the point across; most people would have no idea that Al does that.

Spring steel these days is a very different metal than it was 30 years ago. Fitment is really not an issue here. It's the fact that you have no idea what consequences you'll incur from cutting that steel. Any time you change something on your car you are re-engineering it. You wouldn't want the result to be the spring snapping in half would you?

A buddy of mine put a set of cut eibach sportlines springs on his 99 Z24 a few years back... I remember when he called me from the intersection, when his spring had un-coiled around the base of the strut, and his car got stuck in the middle of an intersection with a semi barrelling down the road towards it....

So... pretty much sold me on "not going cheap on suspension"..... but if you need more convincing.... Darwin's a-waiting

Yeah he already knows that its not good, he's asking why the older cars can do it and get away with it. That was the question.

I would never do it, and I already have drop springs. A friend of mine had an S-10 with cut springs and a few leafs taken out and some lowering blocks in the back and it rode so hard that it cracked the frame all the way through right above the rear axle, you could lift that whole back corner up and down about 3 inches without and thing else moving.

Just curious why Foose would do it if its so terrible.

I'm just putting that out there, for the people who will think that "Foose does it, so it's OK to do to mine too!"

But "Lenko does it, so its okay to do to mine too!" works?

^No. There are some crazy suckers around here.
If Lenko does anything, first ask him if it's safe for you too.

Egad, no... that should be a warning!!

"Lenko did it, so unless you want to go insane, don't even consider it!"

Funny, I was going to post this same question. It has perplexed me for some time.

On a random, but semi-related note, it was interesting to hear the sponsor ads last night for Overhaulin BLING!!!
