Size bolts?
Sunday, September 17, 2006 4:03 PM
Anyone know what size the bolts are that hold your front strut on. I guess they would be called lower strut bolts, its the 2 bolts on the bottom. Im putting new mounts in and im having a hard time getting the bolts out, im going have to beat on them to push them out, but i wanna have new ones on hand to put in because the old ones will probally get rounded up. Also anyone know what to use if your rear strut mounts squeek? There only a year old so i no there not bad, maybe something to spray on them? One more ? anyone no if PB Blaster will help the nuts come off the bolts easier? Thanks

squeek: lithium grease or replace them
they should be 5/16....for the bottom one use an extension on the non weird side (u'll see what i mean) and an extension, then put some muscle into it...top jsut use two ratchets and move both counter clockwise.....thank Art for this info

The ones that hold the strut to the spindle? You aren't going to get those at your local hardware store or anything, they're splined and dealer only. Loosen the nut all the way to the end of the bolt, then hit it with a BFH until the nut touches the strut. Then you should be able to pull them out by hand. If not, take the nut off, and use a large drift punch (if not, a large (like #3) phillips screwdriver) to drive them out. They WON"T turn because they're splined, so don't try to turn them. They're pretty cheap if you want to buy them, maybe $10-15 for all 4.

Don't use anything less than a 3# sledge and you'll be fine. Anything smaller will just dent/bend them.

Machzel08: 5/16". Are you serious? There's almost no SAE size stuff on the suspension, and 5/16" is way too small. They're 14mm bolts (larger than 1/2").

Alright, I tried a electric impact wrench got the top one off with no problem. the bottom one i cant get to because the socket isnt deep enough, so i added an extension but it wouldnt budge. Could it be possible that torque is being lost when using an extension? I think im going to try to buy the right socket just a deep one so i can get it in there. Also if I pound on the bolt with the nut all the way to the end wont it ruin the threads? Thanks

I don't even put the nut on it. Seriously you have to use a BFH (or BFM) if you don't want to damage them.
My sister's 95 cavy was rusted from 10 years of Michigan outdoors (never seen a garage).
I tool the bolts off (3/4" SAE wrench will work if you have one too) (insert joke about 800# gorilla and 2 bunches of bananas)
and whacked them once each about as hard as I could with a 3# sledge,
both just popped right out no problems, no bending, no thread damage.
