Front Tie bar brace... worth it?
Wednesday, September 20, 2006 7:12 PM
I've used the search and i couldn't find anything except for the rear tie bar...

To make the story short... I've driven my 2004 Celica for a year and half now and I love how the car stay balanced when I make hard turns... the body doesnt roll much at all, except everything inside the car moves the opposite side as i make a turn. I want to be able to accomplish that with my Cavalier and Im already doing the lowering kit and installing new strut mounts and bushings. Sway bars will be installed too. My only question is... is a front tie-bar any worthwhile? I see one being sold thru RKSport and its meant to keep the control K arms straight (which i dont really understand what that means lol)... I was never really a suspension freak before so now im just learning...

Any opinions?

searcg for subframe brace, specifically Ken2.2 subframe brace, and yse its worth it (especially the Ken2.2, very inexpensive and worth it)

If your car is manual, see if SpeedracerZ can hook you up with the K brace.

If not, then you'll want Ken2.2s which is a better deal.

Finally if all that fails get the RK sport.

The brace helps more in straight line acceleration.
Esp if you have the poly bushings in the control arms.

But every little bit helps with these cars.

every little bit helps with these cars, but if you dont race, you might not even feel the differences much.

thing is, if you race, you get the full effect. and more of the full effect comes from racing with lateral loads such as turns....

if you are just adding parts cause they are available, then you may be like many on here who get parts then complain about them not making much a difference.

any part you put on a car to increase the suspensions accuracy and efficiency in my view is worth it.... but if you arent really gonna use it... worth is up to you. no one can tell and individual whats worth to them or not.

if you take time to learn you car and how it handles, then you shouldnt have to ask others if something is worth it or not. you'll simply know from your own experience.

Event,

I've done the suspension mod before on my 98 white cavalier before i sold it. I've lowered it, did the front swaybar and nothing for the rear swaybar and i had the upper strut brace and i was quite happy with it. I was not sure what the front tie bar brace does for suspension so i had to ask. What im trying to accomplish is to lower the center of my gravity on my car and it'd be able to handle the hard corner turns and the body doesnt roll as much and keeping both front wheels on the ground evenly as much as possible. I was not sure if the front tie bar brace would help even more to do that or not.

I normally try to take my time and learn and experience on my own, but in this case... i had to ask.

So far, my plan for suspension upgrade would be front and rear swaybars, control arm bushings, GM upper front strut brace, and aftermarket rims/wheels. Im not sure about the rear upper strut brace and rear tie bar brace. I've heard too many opinions about the rear tie bar brace and to most cases i've heard... it doesnt really do much....

well just so theres no confusion of anyone who reads this post....

the front is a "subframe brace"....

the rear is a "tie bar"

mainly its due to the fact the front is a bolt, non moving brace, where as the rear is a brace with heim joints which allow movement.

but as for your goal. more than likely, it would. i remember you from old school and you actually "drive" the car harder than the majority if i remember right.

the body roll issue will be more corrected from sway bars front and rear and also stiffness of the springs/coilovers you use.

the subframe brace will come into play when you stiffen up the suspension to keep from as much chassis parts (unibody/subframe which is basically a fat wishbone looking piece) from flexing since the suspension will prob have far less give than it does in stock form.

as for the rear tie bar.... the people who say it doesnt do much are people that really dont utilize it.

for example, if i go back and look at the one post which was 4+ pages long, it was mainly people who never set tire on any autoX courses or road courses...

one of the bigger mouthpieces of the convo was someone who basically did nothing but drag race.... a form of racing where lateral grip or forces are rarely introduced.

most people wont feel it much on regular roads unless you are doing hard 90 degrees turns which most people arent doing in reality.

if you plan to brace the front, the rear strut brace is a cheap investment and the rear flexes just like the front. tie bars are the cheapest of all braces at under 40$.

but like i said in another post, i dont run with mine day in day out. i use it at the track and then take it off when not in use. more or less i use it as a tool for tuning the car to track conditions, also i figure if i am gonna be slinging it into corners i want it to track as straight as possible in the turns....might as well be then when i use it.

daily driving, no real need. closed course where you can bump up the damping, heat up the tires from cornering.... i let it run.

kinda like i wouldnt wear my shoulder pads to the grocery store, but on game day you suit up in full pads...

it was worth it for me...I don't race( no time), but I love to carve up the turns. the sub-frame brace works like the strut tower brace. it decreases the flex in the uni-body which if I remember correctly makes the car more accurate

like Event said, it will really matter if you race, which means you are really pushing the limits of the car. for a the average driver with what you want I would look into a rear sway bar to match your needs and a rear strut tower brace to complement it. the STB will do the same as the other two it will brace the body and reduce flex.

i want to beef up my suspension as well but i am new to moding. can someone please explain the difference btwn and the point of connection of a rear sway bar, sub-frame brace, strut tower brace, tie bar, lowering springs, struts and coil overs. what would be the cheapest but most effective way out of the above or any thing on the market.

i wish ken 2.2 would hurry up and make those kbraces for the auto's could relaly use em!!

Form what people ahve said even just the normal subframe brace he made helped the car out a fair amount, so the k brace must be awesome.

I never really noticed much of a difference with the subframe brace. I think you are making the right decision by waiting.

As far as ken's braces go, I wouldn't put some crappy aluminum brace under my transmission pan

I wouldn't hold your breath since his turbo cav is gone, its been replaced w/ a 6-speed Targa top C5

and Zach we are all well aware of your opinion on Ken's subframe brace already, they are aluminum so it will bed if you hit something with it rather then bending your subframe, if thats the reason you like to bitch and moan about it every single time its brought up you could very easily ask for steel...... like the original me and him made for my car.
