strut mount or caliper sticking???
Tuesday, September 26, 2006 10:42 AM
I'm getting a clunk coming from what appears to be the front passenger side of my 04 Cavy (it has the FE2 suspension package).

It seems to only do it when I start out from a stop or if I am braking downhill then let off--it's as if it only happens when the front of the car lifts a bit as in acceleration or when I let off the brakes. If the car has been sitting, it is guaranteed that when I start out, it will clunk.

I checked the header and the exhaust up there---it is all ok, there is no evidence of hitting anywhere. I checked the engine mounts (I have both upper and lower RK mounts). I tried bouncing the car while it sat still, but could not re-create the sound (which kind of makes me lean toward the idea of a stuck caliper letting loose---it only happens when I first start moving). It doesn't seem to matter if I go forward or in reverse either.

At first, I thought about the tranny mounts, but they are on the opposite side from where the clunk is.

I may call the dealer since it is still under warranty, but I have to wait till I can get my strut bar and my subframe brace off..

Any ideas??

try shooting some break cleaner on the calipers, might loosen it up alittle if it is sticking. i to have an 04 cav and shortly after u got it i had an issue with my right front strut mount, but it was squeeking not knocking, but they replaced it and noproblems as of yet. but give the cleaner a try if that dont work take it to the dealer and they will fix it.

I agree, try the brake cleaner first. If that doesn't work it should be under warranty still.
May be a strut mount, but doesn't really sound like it.
Also, you may want to check the control arm bolts, make sure they're good and tight.

I am starting to rule out the brakes for 2 reasons. 1. I just changed the brakes in the front and had the drums and rotors resurfaced a week ago. 2. I am getting this noise also when i hit bumps where just the passenger side wheel goes over the bump. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow. I got under there and could not find anything out of whack. I checked the wheel for unusual movement and I checked that my motor mount bolts and my strut tower bolts were torqued down.
