noise from left front supension (clunking)
Sunday, December 17, 2006 7:12 PM
i recenlty purchased a 03 cavi ls sport. when i bought it, it has koni yellows and koni springs (1.2 front 1.4 rear or at least thats what the springs say). I have been noticing a clicking or clunking noise coming from the left front. ive did some searching and ive heard people say that its from the springs binding from being lowered. it only comes from one side and does not do it when moving at mild speed (over 40). it all so only does it when turing the wheel left, hitting bumps and braking.
if it is the springs binding how would i fix it. or what else could it be

i had this same problem, its the upper mount on the strut, take it to the dealer and get it replaced, end of story, also make sure the spring is properly installed and locked in. but like i said i would almost et money on the noise coming from the mount

many changes in the making

so when i bought the car it had a 3000 mile warranty so no problem right take it to the dealer. they are refusing to fix it. they say gm has a service bulletin on the rack and pinion for some fluid restrictor and thats what it is. so i try to argue with them. no dice is there any way i can make sure its not the rack and has anyone had any experience with this.

Does it make the sound while turning the wheel?
There's no TSB for while you have the wheel turned, it's while turning the wheel. There are three, one is the old column needs to be greased TSB. The other two I'm not sure about, I'll have to look them up later.

it makes the sound turning the wheel or not. small bumps will cause it to happen as well. i would think it would make the sound turing the wheel in either direction. but it only does it on the left side. i guess the fix is some kind of grease kit... so does that mean there basically just going to spray the bushings with grease and charge me 150 bucks.

The problem you're describing does not fit the TSB for which the "grease kit" fixes. I know first hand what they're talking about. It would definaly seem to be coming from the steering column, not the wheel. Still haven't looked up the other two. One is a TSB for just about all late FWD GMs, so I doubt it's the same problem you're experiencing. Have you tried taking it to another dealer?

Mine was doing a similar thing for about a month. It sounded like there was a can of pop inside the engine bay clunking around inside. I was going to replace the strut mounts, but I kept procrastinating... and guess what... lol the sound stopped all on its own. It stopped doing it in July or August, and hasn't come back.

i may have been unclear describing the noise. the sound is when you turn the wheel to the left. usually starts at 1/3 and goes to 1/2 turn and only to the left. it make multiple clicks/clunks.
now from what the strut mounts and the noise they make as it was described to be would be more of a banging and not clicking. i would all so hear more when traveling in a straight line and not just turning. is this correct?
but just got back from a dealership with a tech i trust. he didn't have much time to look at it but he said it be could the column as you described. he said that would a possible option but like you say not the "grease" fix. he said some thing is probably lose and its probably not the actual rack but as i understand it a input shaft for the steering. he said he had seen some other gm cars with a problem similar to that. he looked at the mounts and he said they look to be ok. but he didn't have time to drive it. or really inspect it

ok before you buy expensive stuff or pay for inspection....first try to tighten the top trut bolts real good....that might be the problem...happened to me and I went crazy thinking it was the strut mount or any other part....just my 2cents
