Uneven brake pad wear
Thursday, May 31, 2007 12:41 PM
Ok I've had my brembo rotors and Akebono ceramic pads on for nearly a full year now. About a week ago, my squeal indicator came on the right driverside wheel. I took my wheel off to check the amount of pads left, and saw the right pad (closest to the outside of the car had alot of life left in it, but the inner pad was nearly gone. What gives? Why the uneven brake wear? The reason I'm complaining is because now I have to replace all four front pads for even braking and I want to know if theres a problem before I waste another $60 on pads. Thanks guys!

first off, drivers side is left, not right. when you have uneven pad wear, the symptoms USUALLY indicate the following:

inner pad wear - frozen caliper or obstructed brake hose

outer pad wear, or angled pad wear - frozen/stuck slider pin

best way to check for frozen brake hose is to pump the brakes up with the car off (and brakes still fully assembled), and then crack the bleeder screw open, if the hose is blocked, it will be holding pressure at the caliper, and fluid will squirt out. if the hose is NOT blocked, you will just see some trickle out.

yes you HAVE to replace all the pads, and if you do hydraulic components, I recomend you change them per axle, not wheel.

Haha sorry yeah I know what side the driver's side is .... I just need to lay off the crack pipe. I already bought the pair of pads for both the passenger and driver's side, just am annoyed that one bad pad makes you change all four ya know? I will try the bleeder solution tonight to see if the hose is blocked. thanks a ton!

Ok, so tonight I checked the fluid. If I understood you correctly, I was to loosen the bleeder valve and then pump the brakes. There was a bit of fluid released but nothing squirted. Afterwards, I bled the front two brakes (gravity bleed). I was talking to my neighbor (he was a mechanic for like 30 years or something) and he said that the uneven wear of the pads is normal since it was the inner pad that was thinner. I am going to install my new Brembo ceramics tomorrow and we'll have to see if the wear pattern persists. Unless anyone else has any tips or ideas.... Thanks!

well thats almost right, you are supposed to pump the brakes BEFORE opening the bleeder, to build pressure up. Then if the hose is blocked, fluid will squirt with pressure out of the bleeder once opened (without any pedal pressure). It is also somewhat false what your neibor said, because our cars, the outer pad is actually thinner than the inner. Without seeing the amount of uneven wear, it is hard for me to pinpoint the problem. If the other side (passenger) inner pad is worn the same amount, it is probably not unusual wear, but if it is like new, and you only have 1 very badly worn pad, I think you need to figure out whats causing it BEFORE you go replaceing your pads, especially with $60 a set Brembo's

Ok well I will be taking off the calipers today so I'll take some pics and upload them. Thanks man!

best i know is there should be .010 clearance between the pad and rotor on both sides... if you dont then it needs to be shimmed, that will help with even pad wear.. but a stuck slider is bad too
