Hey guys
I would like to know if anyone knows where I can track down an install guide for replacing the stock pads/shoes on a 98 Sunfire
I really don't feel like dropping the $17 on the repair manual.
Thanks!
JB
Here, I'll type one.
Materials:
Floor jack
Jack stand
4 way (or similar) to break lug nuts loose
3/8" ratchet
3/8 allen head socket
Piston compressor
Pry bar (just incase, might not be necessary)
Caliper or bearing grease
If using 4 way to take wheels off, break lug nuts loose.. do not take them off, just break them loose. After breaking them loose, jack the car up in a safe spot and place jack stands under car in safe spot for safety.
Take wheels off.
Using the ratchet and 3/8 allen head, remove the bolts holding the caliper on. Remove caliper. Take the outside brake pad out of the caliper. Using your piston compressor, seen here:
Place that in it's proper place in the caliper, and push the piston in. It would be a good idea to open the bleeder screw for this, I believe it might be a 10mm wrench? Can't remember. After pushing in the piston, put the new pads in place in the caliper. Take the bolts out of the caliper completely and use the bearing or caliper grease (which ever you choose) and lube the smooth part on the bolts, this will allow the caliper to move freely and give you better brake pad wear.
At this point, I would suggest taking your rotors somewhere and having them turned, or replacing them, very smart idea.
Once the new pads are in place, put the caliper back on and tighten the bolts. Done. Put wheels back on, tighten them down. Don't over do it. Once wheels are back on, lower car off of stands and pump the brake pedal until it is hard. Check your brake fluid for good measure.
Now, for the test drive. Take the car out on the highway to atleast 70mph. Do a good firm stop to 0 mph. Drive a mile or two so the brakes can cool off and do it once more. Now you have seated your pads and you are ready to go.
If you have ANY questions, PM me. Sorry for the lack of pictures, as I have never had an opportunity to take pictures while doing this.. this was all by memory.

If you need a guide for the shoes, I haven't done many Cavaliers, someone else might be able to help with that. They are fairly simple I believe though.

you dont have to waste 17 bucks but if you took 5 mins out to search, you might find your answer.
