alright- heres what ive got to work with, an 05 cav w/the GM sport package (w/the sport suspension, stock 16s etc...) ive gotten rid of the 16s, got a set of 18" r-1 racing "hype" rims w/the black finish, razzi body kit and have done a little bit of audio work including a nice 7.5" double din dvd player so it doesnt flip up, its just always there. i also switched the tail-lights to the 02 version, got the 02 spoiler (i just didnt care much for the red bar across the back on the 03+ cav's). i really like what ive got now, and by most of y'alls standards, its still a bit too stock- but... i like the small changes ive done.
what my question is though- how thorough was GM when they put together the sport package? ive not driven any other cav's in a long time to see how well the ride feels while driving... but, ideally id like to drop the car about 1-1 1/2". nothing too much, but enough to get rid of the majority of the wheel gap. i cant recall exactly how much the car is already lowered (w/the sport package), but- are the struts on it built for the stock cavalier, or specially fit for the "sport" package? if i threw on some coilovers for that 1-1 1/2" drop, how significant would it be in ride comfortability? would it be comparable to using stock struts- or did GM give me a little help and make these for this particular height?
yeah, im a bit of a n00b (i dont mind) but- i have been following the forums for a long time. yes, i have used the search function
but ive not found any other posts 'bout this. essentially im trying to find out whether a new set of struts would be warranted alongside any sort of lowering i do. im not going for a 3" drop, or slamming it like some might, just something to look good and still be fairly comfortable. this is my daily driver, and i dont race- i try to drive conservatively after having been in an accident due to wreckless driving.
thanks in advance
You got schooled...
There was never any sport package from gm. the closest thing to it was the LS sport package which was just an appearance package, Lip kit and 16" sexy time wheels.
This is my car on an Eibach pro-kit and KYB AGX adjustabel shocks. I love the ride already :-)

yo you got sold a cav with a body kit!
lol- goes to show how much i know then... guess ill continue to save before i make any purchases. i knew that the lil ground effects were part of the "sport" package... for some reason i was just under the impression that it included a sport suspension as well.... oh well- thanks anyway
The only difference in the suspension is the size of the front sway bar, and whether the rear axle has a pseudo sway bar tucked underneath, as Z24s did. There's no difference in the spring height, spring rate, damper rate, nothing. Don't spend your money on coilovers unless you want to raise and lower your car. If you're just going to stay at a constant height lower than stock, then grab a ProKit or Sportlines. Just be sure to get a proper set of dampers. Some quick searches will net you the results of which struts to use. No matter how much you lower the car, a stock strut or OEM replacement will not be sufficient over the long haul. My personal suggestion as for your best bet are Koni Yellows and Eibach Sportlines, and there'll be plenty of people who will agree with me. It's not the cheapest setup, but certainly one of the (if not the) best for our cars.

There IS a sport suspension... my 04 LS Sport came with the "level 2 sport suspension" which has everythign identical to a base model but with a slightly bigger sway bar.
Level-2 suspension also includes 16in wheels with All-Season Performance tires.
Carry on.
