Ebrake vs. 1st gear or reverse
Thursday, September 25, 2008 2:09 PM
With the brake setup I am about to have in the back of my car, there currently is not a way to use the ebrake. I will have to purchase new cable ends and things. Well I read up a bit and inquired with a few folks about if the option of leaving my car in gear is SAFE. From the forums I have read and the articles on the internet, it is about 60/40 that leaving the car in gear is the PROPER and safest way to do this. From the people I have talked to, it is closer to 50/50. I am looking for the opinions of the people on teh trust .ORG to help me out with this.

What is the PROPER way to stop a manual transmissioned car from rolling while parked and turned OFF? Ebrake? or leaving it in gear?

I do intend to get the parts I need to make the ebrake work, but I would like to have the kit on the car prior to so i will be able to test fit cable ends and things of the sort.

The proper way would be to use the handbrake and place the car in first or reverse.

I have seen cars "pop" out of gear while parked in driveways (no handbrake used) and roll into another car. You remember Shawn from power chevrolet, he trashed his Celica at work leaving it only in gear... hit the wall.

I wanna make it clear that I am not looking to NOT USE my ebrake. I just need to know if leaving it in gear without the ebrake is SAFE since it will be a few weeks until i get the parts needed...

I wouldn't, unless you're gonna carry around something you can use as a wheel chock to stop it from rolling away. E-brake AND in gear is how to park your car.

I say as long as you have something to put behind your wheels to keep it from rolling and make sure you don't park on any sort of a steep hill, you should be fine. Just have to be VERY careful.

Chock it, especially if it's on any kind of incline. I've seen cars slip out of gear, and I've seen them even roll slowly in reverse.

Reverse is definitely the gear to be in, because it's lower ratio than 1st, but don't rely on it.

As long as the force trying to pull your car from its parked position is less than the force of compressing the air in your engine (turning it over), you are fine to leave it in gear.

for the past 3 years i used to only leave it in gear after i've turned it off and parked it. if i'm on an incline or such then yes i use the e-brake. since june or so i use the e-brake. havin no e-brake for a temp time may become a hassle if you want to leave the car runnin.

I leave it in gear.
The only time I leave it with the e-brake is when the engine is running or parked in steep incline.

Hmm... Let me try to be nice to here after that comment, but what I said is that I keep a beater car. I use that car to drive around incause something is wrong with my DD or the project car. The car that you only know about is my 01 Z24 DD that is nothing special I know, but I also have a 95 Z24 and a 97 Sunfire. If you want you can check it out if you want in my profile, but pleae don't talk down to me if you think your car is better in some way. We are just trying to tell you don't half@ss your car instead of waiting a whole 2-3 weeks. It is just plain and simple don't do it till you can be safe, and don't get mad when we tell you the truth that you kinda know yourself on some degree. Otherwise you wouldn't be worried about it. The only reason I don't have everything on my cars is that I'm selling off things to get my Toyota.

I think that was all a big misunderstanding...lol no big deal....I was in no way talking down to you or anything like that...Just misunderstood what you wrote or typed...but anywho back on track.

The ebrake will be there, but I have to have the parts on the car before I can figure out what I need. Make sense? That way I can take measurements and stuff like that. Things that wouldn't really work with out having the parts on the car and NOT FUNCTIONAL for a bit. So my main inquiry here is if it is safe or not, and if indeed like some say it is the PROPER way to do it..

I am in no means saying I am removing the ebrake all together, just that for a bit I will be without it...

I understand that you need to do that for measurements and stuff, but I don't think you should keep driving the car around without the e-brake.

Re: Ebrake vs. 1st gear or reverse

you can get by without it... but it's not recommended...

you can leave the car in gear and should be ok. if you're parked on a street with a curb, turn your wheels away from the curb if parked uphill and towards the curb if parked downhill. that way if the car WOULD pop outta gear, the wheel should hit the curb and stop the car from going anywhere.

either that or just pickup a cheap wheel chock from walmart and chock the car for extra insurance.

Just watch out! Cause if something happens and they find your e-brake wasn't hooked up you are screwed more then you know.
