12" Brakes on 16" wheels-Any Interest?
Tuesday, November 18, 2008 6:46 AM
I just developed a new braking system for the J-bodys. My new design consist of camaro SS calipers, rotors and pads. along with custom machined brackets. The brakes are 11.92" and 1.25" thick so no headt soak here. The calipers are cast aluminum with 45MM pistons. Please take a look and tell me if it is something that would spark any interest. I did have 5 sets of brackets made so they are ready to go once I get the rest of the parts in. The price would be around $500 for a complete set. Thats everything.

Let me know.

Just for the brackets are going to be $200. They fit behind my 99 wheels with a spacer. The 99 wheel turn in alot.

If they fit in with 2000-2002 Sunfire GT wheels with NO spacer, I would be interested.

Ok, I'm confused here.
First, are the calipers and rotors a part of this kit that you're selling?
In the picture, the rotors look like they've been redrilled to fit the 5x100 pattern of our hubs. So does this mea if we just buy the bracket that we'll have to redrill Camaro rotors for this to work?
Last, what is the bracket material made of and how much does it weigh?

I'm not particularly interested in this but if I was, these would still be my questions I'd ask.
Thanks also for helping out the J-body community. Nice stuff.

Yep they are part of the kit. The bracket material is 1018 steel. it would have been much stonger if it was 4041, but that was twice as much. THe brackets cost me about $100 to make each, there not cheap. I would put them at about 1lb each. The corners have a radius so that its much stronger and wont have the tendency to snap.

The rotors are redirlled and will come with the kit.

ONe thing to point out is the brakes do move the wheels out about .5" more. Not sure if this is critical to people, I just noticed it once I lowered the vehicle.

Thats why I want just a bracket. Looks like thats what was done.

If I couldn't get the extra parts I would jump all over the whole kit; and still need to talk to the woman, hopeing to maybe get em for x-mas.

Sweet!! I'd deffinatly be interested if it wasn't for a lack of funds at the moment.
The one thing that I don't like about this kit, and its the only thing. Is the fact that when it comes time for a rotor change, you need to pay to have your rotors re-drilled to 5x100 bolt pattern.
Other then that, Thanks for helping the community!!

Well guys just let me know. I am about finished with the front solid mounts, so this would be a nice combo item.

Well I guess the next question would be, are you going to be stocking the spare rotors so that the purchaser doesn't have to go to a machine shop to have the rotors redrilled?
I know I'm asking alot of questions but these are what I'd think that others would want to know.
Thanks.

A couple of major concerns I see here are that the spacing behind the rotor means that you're going to need much longer studs.
Couple that with the fact that the wheels will no longer be hub centric, and you've got a lot riding on those studs.

I don't mean to be a buzzkill, but that's a serious concern.

Nice work on the brackets, and I've seen your mounts, which are nice, but this kit needs some refining IMO.

The center of the hub is just for centering the rotor, so the fact that it is past the edge of the hub is not a big concern to me as the kit comes with centering rings. By extending the hub with a hub ring its escentially doing the same thing.

I include longer studs with the kit as well.

I am looking into wilwood rotors so that there wont have to be a spacer behind the rotor.
