strut n sprig questions!!! need some help/ideas fast!
Sunday, December 07, 2008 5:23 PM
ok. so im looking for a complete set of front n rear struts and a complete set of sprigs for my 2000 cavalier.

i think im set on the brands i like.
but want more information.
from the sites ive looked at, not much info on what i would like to know!

so some questions are

for struts:

i want some Koni Ajustables.

ive seen yellows and reds[specials]

is the only difference the reds r more stiff?

are they a direct replacement?
or is there modification to anything i have to do?

do u have either yellows or reds?
if so, or u know alot about them, what do u prefer between the two?

any other information u can give me/opinions on them, lemme know!

springs

eibach sportlines or eibach pro's

any differences besides height?

what do u guys recomend?

and plz any more information/opinions on these too!

im not building a race car, its more for looks, and a lil bit of performance.
i would like to have the car still be comfortable, a lil. but i know it will be more stiff!

how bout compatability??
they work together well?
[the koni's and the eibach's]

just lemme know whatever u can tell me!
it will be/is greatly appreciated!

thank u for the help guys,

-brent.

If you search, all this info can be found. Trust me.

I'll help you a bit.

Koni reds are no longer made, only yellows now. I'm sure you're aware, but the fronts are just inserts so the housings require modding, and the rear strut mounts need to be drilled. Comparable Tokico D-specs are a complete buy-and-bolt-in affair, in which personally I'd choose over the yellows now despite Koni's great warranty service.

I believe the Pro-Kits have a softer spring rate, but do not quote me on that. It could be opposite for all I know, but I always felt they were more designed for a daily driven car with some competition in mind like you seek. On the cheaper end of the spectrum the drop they provide also give you KYB AGX's as a cheaper option.

i couldnt find anything really on the springs, but i found a lil of whut i should know bout the struts.
since koni's use parts off the stock fronts and i really need new fronts.....i think ima go with the Tokico's they sound like a reliable company to go with from what people r saying!

also, i kinda didnt understand what u said here.
Joe Schulte wrote:despite Koni's great warranty service.

does that mean Koni's have a better warrentee, or not? lol.

u guys know a good/reputable site i can get the Tokico's at a good price??
seems like bout $550-600 for all four or more! anyone seen cheaper/know where to get cheaper?
because money is tight over here, hahaha. well seems like it is for everyone right now..haha.

but u guys here at J-Bo, do in fact have great info and i really appreciate it!

anyone know a lil more on the compatibility on the sportlines n Tokico's?
or the pro kit and Tokico's?

im prolly gonna get the pro kit tho!

He said your ability to type and properly word things gives him a headache.

Your front struts could be blown all the hell for the Konis to work, they just use the housings nothing else related.

Koni has a lifetime warranty and I've gotten some things before warrantied that maybe shouldn't have been. That's all I'll say.

Though Tokicos have been used with great success and bolt right in, hence now being preferred over the Konis. $500-$600 is standard pricing.

With the Pro-Kit drop you can also use cheaper KYB AGX's.

i have a good feeling konis is not a wise choice for him just for the fact they are not direct replacements as the tokicos are.

Tokico offers a very affordable package with HP dampers and 1.4in drop (you can find it on ebay)

although the stiffness is nowhere near as bad as coilovers, it is not what I would call comfortable. Since you live in an area with bumpy roads (as do I), good luck lol.

HP are marketed as performance dampers, and are warrentied for lowering applications

I have the HP dampers but with a slightly more drop of 1.8in (very similar spring rates to the springs in the tokico package, according to the manufacturer)

and you say this why?
...because you think people who type as i do are incapable of doing anything or something?

it seems like u always have something negative to say, almost critisizing me!
but i dont think thats what you ment, i think its the way you type things and the way i read them???
...or u could just be trying to be a total a-hole? lol. [not calling you one!]

but, if ido get the money, i am lookin to get some D-Spec's. ...i found a site [a link/add on here] that had em for a lil under $500, free shipping, and a lifetime garentee!

also, i think im gonna stick with the Eibach Pro-Kit.
i wanna get the pro kit now and put it on, but like i said, front struts are sagging right now, so i dont wanna put new springs on until i get my new struts!

I love my sportlines/dspecs. I was one of the first to have the combination, maybe even the first? Not sure, it doesn't really matter... I've been running them for a long time and they've done really well. You can't really go wrong with the dspecs, theyre not that expensive when you consider what you're getting - completely bolt on, no hassle, adjustable performance struts meant to be used with lowering springs.

Good luck with your choice.

too me its alot of money! lol. i dont have that much. considering im 19, working just a lil over min wage, lmao! and i pay for all insurance on car, as well as all the crap thats gone/that is wrong with it! and im paying for the damages of an accident all out of my poket, because if insurance pays for it, then my rate is out the roof! lol. but, i do believe thats what im going to do. get the money for my D-Specs. get the Pro-Kit, and bolt her right in. also this being my DD, i dont a whole lot of time to work on her. I need it to go to work, go to school, basically...its my only car. so i think this bolt on kit will do just fine saving me a little bit of time! by the way, AMAZING CAR!!!!!!!! looks great!

ChevyBoi- If you get the suspension or not since I'm assuming you have a base model you might want to pick up a front strut tower bar as you will notice a difference in the steering regardless of suspension with it. And if your willing to get a little dirty head to a wrecking yard and look for convertible 3gen "J-bo's" since they can be had on the cheap compared to buying them online and they came with them from GM. All you should need is a 13mm ratchet and an adjustable wrench just incase you run into one with a firewall mounting point.

no its because your a noob to suspensions and being on this forum for quite some time, ive seen time and time again people in your spot get konis and then have no clue what to @!#$ do. call me an @!#$ if you want, this is the reason why i dont really bother to help people in this forum anymore. if you took some time to research your parts, you'd have a better understanding on what your looking at.

let me break it down for you

koni reds were replaced with koni yellows which are much better as you do not need to take the yellows off the car to adjust them. however in order to install the yellows you have to cut your stock front strut in half just above the knuckle so you can reuse the knuckle for the koni. from there you may or may not have to drill out a bigger hole for the rear strut mounts as some people have had problems.

tokico dspecs on the other hand are a direct replacement and are just as good as the koni yellows except they are more noob friendly which makes for a easier install.

both struts carry a life time warranty on them and both can be had for around the same price roughly.

and like i said, please learn to search and research your items before you start asking the same questions over and over again. take a look at the faq, it has a ton of info and im sure can help you understand a little more about suspensions and the types offered for our cars.

so u think sportlines will be too low to drive in winter?
...thats y i am looking at the pro kit over sports.

and y is it that on most sites, sportlines are cheaper, when they are even lower, and stiffer rided for performance??
seems like the pro kit is always a few bux more!

i did not find what i was looking for mainly.
[the compatability and the other peoples choices on here]
i just threw some other questions in there to futher help me so maybe i didnt have to look through 749719374172678 pages of things to find it! ...after like 10 pages im done looking, lol.

although i did not know that the part you use off the old suspension for the Koni's does not wear out on the strut, i did know u do use part of the old one from reading. thats why i said
ChevyBoi89 wrote: i found a lil of whut i should know bout the struts.
since koni's use parts off the stock fronts and i really need new fronts.....
but from me posting this, i learned that. also, just because im a noob to suspension, and i did not know this detail fully, does NOT mean, if i went with Koni's, i would @#!$ up anything. i am a good quick learner, and as long as i have the right guidence/directions [whatever u wanna call it] noob or not at the project, i 99.9% always accomplish my goal!

AWD GS wrote: koni reds were replaced with koni yellows.

...i knew this from my "search and research"
but some places still sell reds on the internet.

AWD GS wrote: and like i said, please learn to search and research your items before you start asking the same questions over and over again.

i did this. and i only post when i dont find exactly what im looking for.
or if i have too go through too many pages to find a simple answer to something someone knows and can answer very quickly, i do!

thanks for the information tho. u did help me alot really.
and so im guessing u are a begger fan of the Koni's??
..because they are less "noob friendly"

ok. i will deffinatly check out some local JY's and the local Pull-A-Part for sure on that.
but even though they r from 95-99, it will fit my 2000 cav?
also, i was lookin at them on sites and they look to be engone specific, true?
because the DC sport one was not avalible for my car it seemed like.
but maybe im wrong. and i need some more opinions people!
whats the diff between the solid GM and DC Sports one, and the adjustable type like Freedom and Vibrant?
what is better, adjustable or solid?? ...there are many diff opinions on these two types here on the J-Bo!

its really up to you. just like some people like cavaliers over sunfires. its all personal preference. i myself like the konis more than the dspecs only because i have used konis before but never dspecs. i have installed both though however and the dspecs are a much much easier install. for someone that is going to go on their first suspesion, i think its a great choice that they are looking into such a good strut. i feel the dspec would fit better than konis for someone who has never worked on suspensions before.

Well to answer your questions in order.

Yes they will fit a 2k+ cav...all third gens 95-05 are basically the same minus motor combos and front ends....If I remember corectly you can even get a convertable up until 2001...tabs, or the crazy canadian John Lenko would know that better than me though.

They really are not engine specific. your major problem would be if you owned a 2.2 ohv cav since they have a two peice intake manifold the upper plentum might get in the way. I do own an 01 ohv 2200 cav and an 04 eco and the vibrant bar works on both.

the solid Gm bar hugs the firewall better than anything else mass produced ( like dc,vibrant, etc, etc, ) so it won't get in the way. The DC is a waste of money period....I wouldn't pay over 30 for a stb

If you got any other questions shoot me a pm I'd be glad to help.
