KYB GR-2s for x-mas

Ok so I know that everyone says that if you are lowering a vehicle to go with AGXs but I have a buddy with a 1998 Cavalier with the same springs as me (Sportlines) and I like the ride in his car. I am hoping to get the same satisfaction as him. Does anyone have this same setup? If so, how do you like it and do you have any advice or cautions about them?

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions/criticisms. Also, could someone tell me the tools I will need to replace the struts... I know I will need spring compressors which I have, but I would like to be prepared when I go to put the struts on.

BTW, if you are wondering... yes I had the sportlines on stock struts (i know... dumb decision) and they blew out. AGXs were a bit out of the price range of asking for x-mas and I really do like the ride my buddys 98 has.

Once again guys... thanks for the help

even agx's wouldnt support the sportlines. they are too low of a spring for that. your gr-2s are going to blow just as quick as your stock struts. if you want to put them on, go head. just realize you will need to replace them within a year.

as far as tools like you mentioned a spring compressor is really the only thing odd that you need. everything else is just sockets.

Okay. Really I understand that GR-2s are just a replacement for OEM struts, but I guess its better to have something a tad better then sittin on blown struts. Anything is better than that. I will take progress pics when me and my buddies get started on the tearin down process.

anything is better than blown struts....but to replace when with something that is just going to blow really quickly is just a complete waste of money. i have seen gr2's hold a prokit but i wouldn't even trust sportlines on them

Well like I said... I understand that they arent made to support any drop really, let alone the drop that Sportlines give it. I lost my job and money is tight so I gave the idea of struts for a x-mas gift to my parents. I figured until I can find another job and save up money for AGXs that GR2s will get me through. Its deff not a complete solution. I jus wanted to know if anyone has ever had this combo before and how their experience was

when you remove the suspension you will have to get an alignment....then when they blow again, you will be in teh same position just spent more money...find a set of used stock springs and stick them on teh gr-2's till you find a job

well it's up to you

2nd gen guys have been running gr-2s with +1.5in drops for ages, and it seems to hold up just fine, even for the guys that autox and such. Because there aren't any better dampers available to 2nd gens.

but since there are performance dampers out there for 3rd gens that can handle the drop and aren't all that pricey, why not save up just a bit more and give them a shot?

like the tokico blues (HP), they are advertised by tokico to handle lowering springs.

Yes that is correct,I just got my new hp's and prokit in the mail a week ago.I put them on and they handle great.they say they will warranty them for up to a 1.6 inch drop when you cut the bump stops, some say they will warranty them for a 2 inch, but im not real sure.I wouldn't put the sportlines on the hp's though. To big of a drop for them. Here is my post of my new setup,if you need any idea's.I got most of my info from a post on here.I don't remember exactly what the name of the post is but its a full picture install of koni yellows and the eibach pro-kit.Search for koni yellow/prokit install with pics.I think its something like that. But good luck with the new setup.

Yep, the dust boots are missing, along with the bump stops. While the dust boots aren't necessary, though highly recomended, the bump stops are necessary. One good bump and the top of the strut is toast, along with the seal and pressurized nitrogen inside. The bump stops will need to be cut for the reduced hight. The SportLines may bust the strut before the bump stops are needed any ways.
