I have been having an odd issue with my rear shoes and drums. I have replaced them with stock OEM parts, NAPA gold, and now Pepboys Platinum. No matter what brand I use, I have the same issue.
The rear shoes will squeek and howl anytime I push the brakes. I have adjusted them many times, and it doesn't help (unless I adjust them so they dont work). After about 5,000 miles on the shoes, I pull off the drums and the rear shoes have an odd wear pattern in them (see pic below). There are like chisel markes in the shoes, but the drums looks just fine.
Any ideas?
You need to go back to step one replace hardwear, adjuster drums and inspect backing plate for wear wheh everything is disasembled also don't forget to lube the backing plate at the contact area's . that pattern is odd the only time I saw something like that before was a guy who had the rear shoes reversed on the plate and the hardwear hooked up all wrong. If I had to take a guess I would say adjuster problem if it where my car i would just replace everything to ensure not to have to redue the job again. Try to get a lay out of the set up either from a chilton manuel or from alldata or Mitchell Pepboys can print the mitchell on for you.
I see this alot where i work. what you should do is sand down the shoes just so the "chisel" marks go away. whats happening is the brake dust, etc is getting stuck the the "valley" of the marks, and when it builds up high enough, your going metal to metal.
-sand down the shoes (Take special precautions not the breathe that crap in. even though its illegal to manufacture brake pads containing asbestos in the united states, its still legal in other parts of the world.)
- Wash the drums with soap & warm water. (have them turned/machined if there is a rust ridge) yes, soap. use a green scotch brite, or sponge, wash mitt, etc. this will remove all the metal shavings from the surface of the drum. a simple spray with brake/parts/carb cleaner wont do!
- clean/lube the appropriate areas on the backing plate, and make sure your wheel cylinders are moving normally.
- adjust the rear brakes as necessary.
