Removing control arms
Thursday, October 15, 2009 10:55 PM
Tonight I tried to remove my pass side control arm. I got all the bolts and such off just fine, but the darn thing will not come out. I tried using a pry bar but I am afraid of bending the sub-frame or deforming the mount location. I searched and the only thing I found was to pull harder. Any other advice?

Literally it is just that....pull harder, and from different angles. I pulled mine out of my car at 75k miles and it took me a good 20-30mins per side and I wasn't being nice. I finally resorted to using a mallet (a really big mallet lol) on the front side of them near the ball joint to get them out along with a pry bar.

Btw, they should be dead level with the frame otherwise they're a TON worse to get out, and it usually works best to pull the front out first.

Wiggle it and pull harder.

Use the pry bar again, you will bend the bar before you bend the subframe. Thats all you need.

I removed mine with the subframe on the ground, so I'm not sure if this is why, but I didn't have much of a problem. Just a little wiggling and they came out fine.

With all the N-body arms i have removed i have noticed that how easily they pop out vary from car to car. Some almost fell out while others needed quite a bit of persuasion.

A heavy screwdriver on a pivot point on the front of the control arms works well with prying it out.
Done right, the front should be out in less than 30 seconds.
The rear then just wiggles right out. Even there, a good solid, heavy screwdriver works wonders in prying the rear out too.
Once you do it a few times, you get to know the shortcuts to removing them.

Thanks for the advice but I tried for another 30-45 min last night and I couldn't get it do to more then wiggle slightly in there. I almost pulled the car off the jack stands yanking on it. It seems like the rear vertical bushing is getting stuck some how. I did have some damage a few years ago to that wheel, front right, and I am wondering if something in there is a bit out of whack.

I gave up and am just going to put the springs + struts on so I can drive the car to work on Monday. I am going to have a friend's shop quote me on the control arm bushings. I might have to wait and get those done down the road.

Thanks for the help.

get a 42'' pice of 5/8 steel rod (my home made pry bar lol.) yank on the front first then the back then the front then the back then the front then the back and it should come out front first then the back. then the easy part is all done!!! i just did my prothane bushings last month
