Rear brakes work too much AGAIN
Thursday, January 14, 2010 12:07 PM
I made a thread awhile back about my back brakes, here we go again.
I have new everything on my back brakes except for backing plates.

The brakes are working too much. I took it to a mechanic, he said he found something online that says you HAVE to use acdelco or they get hung up. He chamfered the ones I have and charged me 65 bucks. Now a week later, problem is back UGH.

So I just ordered ACDelco pads. Think it will fix it?

I do all my own work. I just paid that guy as a last resort, and of course, didn't fix it.

^ I recall putting them on just how they came off. I thought they were the same size. Are you talking length of brake pad material?

I can't edit my posts. Damnit. I wanted to add that I am getting new drums too because once again, my NEW ones are warped in just 2 months.

Definitely try the Delco shoes. I had all sorts of problems from every aftermarket brand shoes I tried. No problems what-so-ever since I put the Delco shoes on.

I am a designer/engineer. I am going to figure out WTF causes this when I get the delco shoes in.

Something else worth wondering.. Delco has to options. You can get the OEM delco shoes (most expensive) or you can get the delco durastops (less expensive). Or of course.. aftermarket. I wonder what the difference is between OEM delco and delco durastop.

sorry about my earlier post. was drunk last night. the larger shoe surface goes in back.

as for the cost difference, i would assume the cheaper of the two are relined shoes and the more expensive is a completely new casting.

Never had a problem with anything that involved drum brakes.
Make sure that you do grease those areas for the shoes to move freely so they don't stick which may be causing the issues you're having.
I also can't understand what makes the Delco brand so much better than the aftermarket.
I've never used the Delco brand when I did my rear drums and never had an issue with anything aftermarket.
And did you even think about changing all the hardware of your drum setup? They do go bad and springs tend to weaken over time so replacing all the hardware of the drums will also help you keep that factory fresh feeling to the brakes.
As cheap as the drums are, replace those too.
Good luck and let us know how it all works out man.

Rear disk job is not happening. This is my daily driver (as any J-body should be IMO). I need function, reliability, and cheap. Rear disk is neat but I don't want to mess with the ebrake garbage or put a ton of time into my car. Other toys yes.. but cavalier? frick no.

I did put all new hardware in (springs and all). The ONLY part that was not replaced was backing plate. New parts were springs, pins, drums, pads, wheel cylinder, brake lines.

Delco shoes should be here in a few days..

Got the wrong damn shoes in. My dealer told me the part number I needed. I found some on ebay. The seller checked my vin as he is a dealer and said these are what I needed. He was wrong. I don't even know what shoes these are. I guess I need to order the durastops as I got that part number online
here is what I bought last week

Looks like I have to do some homework and relist them on ebay

I had the same problem and yes, Delco shoes did fix it and they still work great after 1.5 years. The only thing that makes sense to me is that the material they are made from has the correct friction. I got mine from RockAuto.com

According to the local dealership parts guy, Durastop is the name Delco uses for all their brake parts now. I bought brake hoses from the local dealer and the box was labeled Durastop.

^ My dealership told me the same thing, so did rockauto when I called. I got the durastop shoes today at my local dealer. I talked them down to $42. I took off my old shoes and used brake cleaner on the backing plate. I also put some low temp grease (just a very thin coating) where the shoe rubs on the backing plate. Spring kit was new 6 months ago so I just reused those.

I had the adjuster all the way down on both of them and the shoes were still lightly dragging on the drums. There was no more adjustment so I just put the wheels on and test drove. No problems. I guess time will tell

When its time to change my rear shoes (over 100K on stockers) I will just get new Delco/Durastop shoes.
