pre alignment
Tuesday, February 09, 2010 7:19 PM
Alright,to start off i just got done yesterday with my lil project.
I installed my tokicos/goldlines,control arm bushings, and rack and pinion with new outer tie rods(old rack was done for)
I took some measurements before tearing apart the front end,and put everything back according to those measurements.
So my problem is,i have some serious neg toe, \ / does anybody have a quick and simple method to correct the toe?
I've searched the forums but got confused with what info was there, and also checked Google, but hoping to find something simpler.
I just want to get it close enough to drive safely to the alignment shop, cause right now the tires are fighting one another.
Any body with alignment experience plz chime in,thanks.

Just readjust your tie rod ends. Make sure your steering wheel is centered first. Disconnect your tie rods from the knuckle. Also when you measure, make sure the weight is supported on the control arm near the hubs. Do this safely though. Have jackstands on hand. Level out the front. Torque everything to spec. Install your rotors with the lugnuts. I use 2 plumb bobs on a string over the cooling fins of the rotor to the ground take the string to the extreme right or left of the rotor cooling fins. Then make a line from each bob tip to see the toe angle of that hub. You can extend that line to have a better indicator of toe. I use a long carpenter level. You can also use a yard stick or any straight edge. That should help you visualize your toe. Repeat for the other side. Hope it helps you out.

Alright got to playing around with the alignment tonight,i got it at least to where the tires aren't fighting one another.
My steering wheel is pointing to the left quite a bit,but gonna take the car to pep boys sat morning for an alignment,
so I'll be driving the truck for a few more days.

Or you could do something like this.
It's ghetto but I've been using this method for years.
I've also never gone to an alignment shop because I've never needed to do so.

Here's the how to page.
Here's some pics from there.

Other side:

Make sure that the levels are level.

Then measure the front of the levels of both tires and write down the length.
Do the same for the rear of the level and write it down.
Then make your adjustments to the tie rods as needed to get both the front and the back the same or equal to each other.

It's not hard to do and the pictures above are from the Toyota that I rebuilt the entire front end and had to realign not only the toe but also the camber too.
Good luck with it and hope this helps.

Nice write up,i wish i knew that,i just measured from center to center of the tires, and adjusted the best i could.
But i took it to pep boys yesterday and they lined everything up.
But next time I'm differently going to try this.

i would always take it to a shop to do it vs the at home method. they have way more sophisticated equipment and can put things in spec.
