Wa Wa Wa front end noise while turning wheel left
Tuesday, March 23, 2010 10:50 AM
Hello,

For the past while I have had this "wa wa wa wa" noise while turning right. Or even if the wheel when driving straight was slightly tilted to the right. I figured it was the front pass side wheel bearing so I replaced it sunday.

The bearing was in pretty decient shape for having 180,000km on it. It was making a little bit of noise while spining it in my hand so I figured that would be it. Got the car all back together and took it for a test drive and still the same thing. I was like WTF?

When I had everything torn apart I inspected the drive axle and the boots and everything was in perfect shape. No rips or tears so I just put everything back together.

I installed new lower control arms with poly bushings and new lower ball joints last summer and got a wheel alignment done so there not that old in that department to cause any problems I would think.

Only thing I can maybe referance the noise to is

1.)Maybe it could be the driver's side wheel bearing making the noise instead of the pass side which I replaced?
2.)Something in the one of the drive axles? Havent inspected the driver's side axle yet.
3.)Issue with something in the steering column or the steering box.

Currently I still have my OEM 16" GT wheels on which have been on all winter. I checked the front pass side tire and the weights on there. But an unbalanced tire would cause vibration not a "wa wa wa wa".

Regards,

I generally would replace wheel bearings as pairs...

hard to say though.

Sounds like power steering pump

I never really thought about that Josh. I just replaced the power steering pump a couple months ago. The hex shaft snapped off the end of the pump. Never seen that one before.

I'll definately look into the pump. I'm not having any problems turning the wheels but that doesnt mean that couldnt be it. I checked the fluid in it a couple days ago and it was full when I checked my oil.

If it was the pump, wouldn't if give an the same issue in both turning directions? If I do recall it may make the noise slightly turning the other direction but its very quiet.

Ill get in contact with NAPA about the warranty and if they will replace it.

is it a rotational noise? does it get louder/faster with speed? or does speed seem to not effect it?

To me it sounds like a rotational noise. The noise seems to stay the same as I recall no matter what the speed but I would have to verify that. I cant remember. Ill pull onto the freeway tonight and update then.

The title of the post says when turning left. But the first line says when turning right it makes the noise. If you are turning right, the most weight is put on the left wheel bearing( driver's side) and the opposite for a left turn.

I would also replace wheelbearings in pairs.

I know i replaced both wheel bearings trying to get rid of my noise.
Turns out it was the driver CV shaft. It wasn't clicking in turns, but was making noise at highway speed.
Something to look into.

I'm going to replace the drivers side wheel bearing this weekend. I should have done them in pairs. You make a good point about the weight transfer when turning. Ill update once I get it replaced.

I replaced the driver side front wheel bearing on saturday and the noise is now gone. The bearing was pretty shot. I'm suprised it wasnt making noise when driving straight. Both sides now have new wheel bearings Should have done them both in the first place.
